Best Clowns?

20gallon

Member
A buddy of mine is cycling his tank & in a month or so(assuming his cycle is done) he wants to add 2 small clowns as his first fishes, I believe he has a 15 gallon(Not positive) he was asking me what species of Clown best fits this bill so I told him I'd ask the experts....you guys!!!
He mentioned he likes the Tomatos when he sees them in the store tanks.
Any recommendations for him?
Thanks in advance

Many of the recommandations out there for any of the smaller clown fish will state that a 20 or 30 gallon tank is the minimum. Gotta love how the experts contradict themselves.
According to Joyce Wilkerson the percula is the smallest clown fish and tend to grow slower than some of the others reaching about a max length of 2.5 inches, and that a 10 gallon tank is adequate for them.
Based on that I would recommend the percula clown fish, or an upgrade to a 29/30 gallon tank, then his options would increase.

I agree. If it's a 15 then the Percula is the only long term option IMO. A 20 can house a pair of Ocellaris. Tomatoes need more space.

I know percs are said to be the best choice for a 10 gallon but I've had a pair of Occellaris in a 10 for almost 2 years with no problems. I do realize you have to take long term survival into account though. Don't you have 2 Occellaris in your 10?

Yes I do.
They're a couple of mis-bars I raised. They were too small for the Lagoon so I put them in the 10 until the end of the year until they get bigger. Then they go into the Lagoon.
