Best filtration for a 30 gallon

I currently have a skilter 400 on my 30 gallon but the water looks cloudy and i would like to get a filter that is underneath the aquarium so i can put a skimmer and heater in there...i was looking at an aqua clear wet/dry but have been reading that bio balls are bad for reefs due to the high nitrates...any suggestions are welcome...thanks

For primary filtration I'd suggest about 1 lb of quality LR per gal and a DSB of approximately 4"-6"...if you do decide to use a sump then they can be used without the bio-balls...myself I prefer to use a refugium with additional LS and calupera algaes. With either a sump or a refugium a quality protien skimmer is a good idea...or you could probably skip the sump and use LR/LS/hang-on skimmer and nothing else. Options are limitless...but in my opinion the vital part of any reef filtration is LR/LS

I use a H.O.T. 250 Magnum canister and a SeaClone skimmer. I only keep the Magnum on the tank because I paid over $100 for it back in my freshwater days and it makes a great powerhead! :) Just buy a good skimmer and have a hang on filter that you can drop on the tank when needed for carbon, etc...

with my 29 i just run a sea clone skimmer plus two power heads, with a DSB of 3" and 35+ lbs of lr. but i only have three fish in there as well so the bioload isnt that heavy

Awfully expensive for a 30gal. As you can see from other people's posts, a good skimmer and 40-50lbs of LR is all you need. You could buy the LR with the money you'd spend on that filter.

that wet dry is not only expensive, but a bit overkill for a 29 gallon, besides, you are better off with a good biofilter(which is the lr and a dsb of sand not cc), good circulation and a skimmer, much much better, IMO, plus the lr will provide shelter and food and aesthetics to the tank as well(and your water quality will be more controlable)
particularly wiht nitrates, which wet dry's are known to promote and are a problem for corals

Tetratec PF300 with the heater capsule and a sea clone skimmer. The water is crystal clear and everyone seems happy.

I removed my skilter a month ago and replaced it with a handout Prizm skimmer from my brother in law. I now have only 45lbs of lr and powerheads providing my filtration on my 30gallon. My nitrates have actually fallen below 2ppm for the first time.

on my 29 gallon i have a fluval 304 with a bag of chemi-pure, and i also have a eco-system 40 hang on refugium. thats all i have except for a 1 inch sand bed and about 45 pounds of lr. i also have a hagen 201 powerhead for extra circulation.
