Always wanted to ask everyone what they though was the best oil and filter for auto's.
I switched to a synthetic oil for my 97 Grand Prix and I use the Mobil 1 oil filter, its my first time using the oil filter.
And does anyone agree that Penziol is the worst thing you can put in your car?

Hey Thomas, I have always used amsoil in all of my vehicles and it seems to work great. It's a little more expensive but you can go longer without changing your oil.

I've heard alot of good things about amsoil, they seem to have been around for a long time.
What gets me hot under the collar is that all you should have to do is put oil in your car for the 3000 or 3 months thing right. No they have all these additives and crap that you can add to oil to help do this and to help do that. Why don't they just come out with an oil that does it all instead of cheap crap oil that breaks up and shortens the life of your car.
My understanding is that with the right oil filter you can extend the life of the car and perhpas get 300,000 miles out of a good engine if properly taken care of.
Problem there is that almost all oil filters can claim that take out the finest microns possible, but to what degree? Some are used up right away and particles still get into the engine. So what is the best?

I have used all different kinds of junk inmy bronco. It has 286,000 miles on it, no rebuilds same block, same heads. Honestly as long as you change your oil when your suppose to, and don't drag the heck out of your car it is not a big deal. I think I use mostly quakerstate. Change my oil every 3k and i never use synthetic. I figure at the age of this engine why start something new........
On my Z on the other hand I used amsoil synthetic, and I use the same on my pathfinder, just because the wife drives that, and she is a little harder on that engine. Plus she does a lit of stop and go driving.

I use Mobile 1 in my Vette and BMW. I use whatever the filter the dealership installs. I change the oil in my Corvette about every 5,000 or 6,000 miles. It has a percentage of life guage that tells me when to change it. I change it when it says it has about 25% left. I change the oil in the BMW around 13,000 miles. It also has an indicator that says when it needs servicing.
IMHO, changing oil every 3000 miles is a racket. Back when Jiffy Lube first his the market, 3000 miles became the standard. I wonder why? If changing oil is your business and owner manuals are saying anything from 5000 to 7500 miles, all you have to do is convince everyone that 3000 miles is the magic number and you make twice the money.

look, im a tech and all you have to do is change your oil every 3000 miles or 3 months and there wont be any issues w/ your vehicle, EVER(at least engine related). sythetic oil is a little different because it takes longer for the oil to break down.it doesnt matter what kind of filter or oil that u use as long as you dont use somekind of cheap aftermarket crap. you get what you pay for even with cars.
as far as the whole oil breaking down thing, oil starts to break down the fist time you put it in the car and start it up. all of that heat and combustable by products from the engine contaminate the oil and start the decomposition.
filters work the same in engines as the do in tanks, they collect extra metal particles that have broken down in the engine. the oil is just like tiny balls and it helps the different metals from not coming in contact w/ each other, but the metal still wears and creates tiny, tiny shavings that move around in the oil until they are captured by the filter. the filter will eventually reach capacity and that is another reason it too needs to be changed when you change the oil. besides, if you didnt you'd be adding all of that trash that is in the filter into the new, clean oil.
so again, just change your oil every 3000 miles (5000 if you want to push it) and your engine will last you a long, long time.

Here is a reply to the question you asked that I got off my corvette forum. This reply is pretty standard from those in the know:
"The Mobil 1 High Efficiency Oil Filter is the most advanced oil filter available for consumers today, offering unsurpassed filter durability and exceptional filtration capability. When used with Mobil 1 Synthetic Engine Oil, this filter provides the ultimate in engine wear and cleanliness protection. Removes more contaminants via a substantial improvement in multiple pass filter efficiency (95% vs. 80% for conventional filters) by using a synthetic fiber media. It also offers significant improvements in filter durability, both in hydrostatic pressure testing (steadily increasing pressures) and in cyclic pressure impulse testing. The Mobil 1 High Efficiency Oil Filter outperforms conventional filters by 2.5 to 1 in hydrostatic testing, and by 3 to 1 in cyclic pressure impulse testing. Reduces resistance to oil flow while improving filter efficiency. Easier removal of the filter at the end of its useful life (less straining with the oil filter wrench) based on use of a special gasket that requires less torque at installation. The Mobil 1 High Efficiency Oil Filter is available in a wide variety of sizes to accommodate a broad range of consumer automobiles and light trucks."

so like i said the oil filter in your car is nearly equal to the filter on your tank--metaphorically speaking. it just so happens that this mobil 1 filter has an advanced filter element that makes it more effecient - reducing friction while the oil is passing through it, and an increased ability to catch more of the harmful particles that i refered to earlier.
i also said that you get what you pay for. if you want to spend and extra $5 on a filtergo ahead. i'll continue to use oem parts and change my oil every 3000 miles. after all, i do have a 96 camry w/ 120k miles on her.

I don't disagree with you. I also use the OEM filter installed by my Chevrolet dealer whenever I get my oil changed. I was simply answering the question that Thomas asked in what we think is the "best" oil filter. This the filter that I always see getting the vote when that question is asked.

Thanks Tangman and shawn.
Ah back to the moble filter, when I went down to purchase it I looked at the others. I even hefted the moble in one had and the others in the other hand. The moble filter must have been twice as heavy as the others. But it cost around $12 bucks. I figured there must be more filter material in it than the others, but I also realize that it isn't just a paper filter either.
I called a mechanic that gave me a number to some oil filter place, don't remember where it was now. It was he that told me that all filters can pretty much claim that they will filter out about the same partical size, but that could be very missleading, because its only up to a certain point then they loose there effectivness. He told me the one I should get is the moble and thats what I am trying now. When I change it just for curiosity I'm going to cut it an half and take a look in it.
Thanks for the imput guys

Hey Thomas,
If you want to read tons about this filter and see years of discussion on it and even links to places where you can (at least at one time) get them much cheaper, go to the "corvetteforum" (is this sneaking in a link) and do some searches. I'm sure most high performance car sights have had the same discussions, but that is where I hand out.

My advice, dont cheap out on the friggin oil filter. I mean come on, is spending an extra 5 or 7 bucks going to kill you. Lets spend this big pile of money on a car, and then put a cheap, cracker jack prize, generic, crappy filter on it. I am an engineer in the automotive industry, I build extremely high horsepower race engines, I drag race in several classes, and my family has been in the car business for over 30 years, I think I have seen enough people screw themselfs around by skimping on maintenence. MOBIL 1 is a good filter, I like royal purple oil and mobil 1 synthetic. The company I work for does testing on every possible oil out their, I will ask one of the hydraulic guys and see what they say.

I can agree with that logic, its only a few bucks more for a much better filter. Let me know what the guys say.
