if its your primary source of denitrification = yes but if you just want good life in your sand 3 should be fine. But the thicker act as a bertter filter but with LR and skimmer I wouldn't worry.The top should remain white looking but a true dsb isn't going to be white. Theres going to be different colors in the different levels if not the sand isn't alive its dead. The colors are alga,bacteria ect. the worms,snails keep the top clean. It just shouldn't have any black spots. grey ones should move and dissapear
