my tank has been set up for almost 4 months now. i currently have a false percula clown, some green mushrooms and some zoos as well as snails and an emerald mithrax crab, all with great success. i do all my buying online and was wondering what are some good beginner soft corals as well as which ones are the most visually attractive in person (its hard to tell from online pictures and there is no fish store in town). most notably, i was looking at yellow fiji leathers, toadstool mushrooms, and devil's hand leathers. my lighting is a 156 watt t-5 unit btw (which from what i'm aware of can accommodate most soft corals). thanks in advance.

I like pink and yellow toadstools & neon green sinularia(sp). How big is your tank? You could also keep many different types of LPS corals if you wish to go that route. Choices....choices.....

there are many that are almost unkillable, but they are also hard to keep contained without it spreading(kenya tree for example). I have a toadstool, cabbage and toadstool and all are very hardy.

as of now, i'm leaning towards a yellow fiji leather coral, but have found several sites saying that it is harder to take care of than other leather corals. what's the reason for this?

yellow leather needs a lot more light than other leathers or softies. they r also very sensitive to water chemistry. once acclimated though, they can be very hardy. i ordered this corals 3x in the past online, each time it arrived all brown. they r very bad shipper as stated above, and easily get bruised. this is a coral i'd buy at a lfs. my lfs seems to never carry this coral.

yes i have looked at those before but i want some diversity as i already have various polyps. there actually is a lfs in my town but it is overpriced and the livestock never looks healthy plus the selection stinks. thanks for the info. i may actually try a toadstool seeing as several people have recommended them and they are easy to take care of.

Do a search for local reef clubs or Marine Aquarium Society in Charlottesville. There you will likely find someone offering frags for trade, or you can post a request for the Tyree toadstool. This way you don't have to worry about having the specimen shipped and you get to view the specimen you're buying first hand.
ever heard of this..."SHENANDOAH valley reef club"
Supposedly based in Staunton.

i know i've changed my mind a lot, but i decided to go with a kenya tree coral. i was initially turned off by the fact that they require more feeding than other leather corals, but i liked it more than toadstools. gets here on monday or tuesday.
