Best way to do it and for how long

Getting new lights this week. I know I need to acclimate my tank slowly, but I'm not sure how.
40 gal regular..
going from 4x55pc
new lights 4x95 VHO (woooweee!!)
What would be the best way to do this.
How should I adjust my photoperiod.
currently 12 hours

You can put something translucent accross the top of your tank like one of those super thin cutting boards which you can buy cheap and try that for a couple of days. If you don't want to go that route you can start off with only 2 bulbs then 3 then 4 acclimating your tank slowly.
