Best way to hack/attach xenia?

I have a large ball of xenia that I want to frag down, What is the best way that you have found to attach it to rock/rubble? The cutting part I'm not to worried about. Is there anything that I must do to the xenia before I cut it?

stick a toothpic through its stalk and rubber band to rubble

did it 100+ times using the way aarone suggested.
