Best way to photo tank with Digital Camera

I have been trying all day to get some good pics with my Nikon Coolpix 990 Digital camera, and can't seem to get anywhere, maybe somebody can give me the basics of taking digital pics, or pics through an aquarium

I have one of those lamps with three bubls on them and point them at the tank turn my flash off and then take the pic

are using a macro function? Got the flash turned off? I'm no expert, but the only decent pics I've had come out are after playing with the lighting, and distance from the glass. Lots of trial n error to get it right.

looks like trial and error is the key.

you might try putting more than one item on a line in your signature, for example all your fish on one line, all yor clean up on another line, and all your corals grouped up, maybe by type on their own lines.
that is assuming you were interested in making it more readable.
