i just had my furnace serviced by Y*** & C*******.the furnace was shutting off all the time. When the heating service company came over they told me I needed a gas valve, pilot burner and pilot tubing. The job was completed in 2 hours. My beef with this company is their overly excessive charge for parts.I did not have time to check pricing BEFORE the job was done and paid. Here is a break down: Gas valve paid $400. price everywhere $63-78.00
pilot burner paid $225[major rip off] price everywhere$16-22
aluminum pilot tubing kit $115 price at plumbling supply $10 for 5 feet!
I have a good mine to stop payment on my check and make them adjust the bill.
So if you are in Bronx Ny or Mt Vernon NY area BE WARNED!

How much was total bill?
The part called "Gas Valve" can mean many different things. Yes, it is a valve with a gas line flowing through it, but its nothing for heating units to have expensive parts.
I know your upset but please do the history of your EXACT unit. and the EXACT part number needed before you cream the maint guy.
I am not defending the guy, but if you really were charged so extreme, call the BBB. Just make sure you have your facts SOLID or you will make a clown of yourself.

i used to sell parts. some gas valves ARE quite expensive. I buy parts for a heating service company. we have a 40-300% markup on parts (granted, the 300% is on very small parts). this is sorta standard from what ive been told. remember, the markup helps for the 1 year warranty, for the travel time to get the parts, etc. if you know where to get the parts, get em yourself and have the service company put em in. otherwise, be happy you have heat.

I did a search on the internet for the same EXACT parts the guy used.Same make and model number.I even printed it all out.My facts are correct are correct. The guy even told me he had to replace the "thermocouple".But I told him I just replaced it the previous day.He said I left off a small piece and I would need a new one but he wasn't going to charge me for it,nice guy.His price $95.00! I showed him the packaging for the one I bought, exact same thing,Honeywell 36 in. universal. The price on the package,$7.99.
I understand the company needs to make a profit.I have a retail store myself but when your mark up is 700% give or take, something is wrong. The hardware store selling the same product for $7.99 is making a profit. The service place charging $95.00 for the same thing is criminal.
Thanks for the tip on the BBB

grr, things like this really tick me off.
people have no issues paying 135+ an hour to lawyers, 100+ an hour to IT people, etc, but paying a service company money always comes out as the service company robbing them.

Am I happy I have heat, yes.Am I unhappy I got ripped off, yes!I know the company is in business to make money, but if you take a 2x mark up on a product that everyone else sells for 2x less I would think that is a good profit and you aren't ripping off your customers.Do you know how much 1/4 tubing you can buy for $110.I think he used about 18 in.

I have a problem paying that much for lawyers and IT people.

So how much was the total bill?
Sorry if I sound like I am defending what sounds like a potentially slimey company, BUT without totals it is a shot in the dark. No secret anything HVAC is not cheap.
How much for parts total, and how much labor?
Was theres a parts trip charge? fuel surcharges? or just flat parts+labor?

Unfortunately I did not have time to do my research.i could have saved a bundle. When you look for a lawyer or IT guy they tell you their fee up front so you know if you want to use them or not.I could have told the service guy to go away and call someone else. Most of the people I deal with are honest and reliable.I took it for granted that the service people were just as honest I was wrong.I guess buyer beware. But BEWARE YOST& CAMPBELL!

Honestly it doenst sound that bad.
I know it is not what you might want to hear but those numbers are NOT horrible. They ARE January prime rates for prevailing service work.
Probably could have shaved 30% by going with a small outfit such as a one man+apprentice outfit but it doesnt seem all that crazy for the work you had done.
A little high, yes.....CRAZY!!!??? no, not at all.

Ouch had ALL the parts with him....usually that equates either good or bad.
#1- great, its a true top notch ready for anything company that carries ANYTHING and is ready to rock.
#2- parts really were just common no brainers. Show up and swap em out and be gone in an hour.
