I like short returns, so you can produce a stronger flow. Are you going to have any closed loops on the tank also. What size pump are you using from the sump?

well i was thinking of drilling some holes on the back installing bulkheads and running 1 pump to supply all of them

First of all... What do you plan to do with the tank? FO, FOWLR, or reef? That makes a difference on how you want to set it up.

On my 800 fowlr I have 1 closed loop pushed by a 1hp hayward. I have another 1hp hayward pushing my downdraft skimmer and and acting as return from my sump. I have my closed loop on timers wich come on at about 12 half hour intervals at random times through the day and night. Its been working great and I find that my fish like the various flows.

First off I would like to say this plumbing is very basic and could be made better but its working great. The haywards run warm and are saltwater rated and they pull alot of current, around twelve amps. That is another reason why I have my closed loop on timers because of electricity and heat issues. I used the pumps because I tore down my above ground pool but they push around 80 or so gpm.

I used a pool canister filter for filtration but had to poke holes in the micron filter because of the flow restriction..

Sorry if Im Hijacking. I didnt use garf plans. The tank is made out of plywood framed up with 4x4's. I used a rubber pond liner instead of epoxy with an acrylic front. I havent had any leaking problems. If you want more info and pics on my construction drop me a email. miketoppin243@msn.com
