I have a 72 G and had the tank in activety for about 14 weeks. my nitrite and nitrates are sky high. I've been doing water changes weekly cause I seem to be getting a faint odor from the water. DO you think i should get a protein skimmer to help lower Nitrates and the slow down water changes. Please advise in detail. I have a clown, huma huma, hawaiian spotten puffer, hippo tang, racon angel. All around 1-2 inch in size and all are stable and getting along except fot my angel that is starting to look a bit weak and not swimming or eating much:jumping:

Hi there.I would recommend a skimmer. Do you have any other type of filter system on your tank? Do you have any plant life? I would continue with the water changes and see about adding a filter system on to your tank. good luck!

Large bioload + small tank = problems
Cutdown feeding to once every 2 - 3 days to start.
What filtration do you have? any LR? do you have a sump/fuge etc?

Hey man, dont even think about feeding yer fish 2-3 days. Yer fish will get hungry and kill each other. Slow it down to maybe every other day, or every day in smaller doses. U really do need a protein skimmer, and a fuge is a smaller tank beneath yer display tank that holds more water volume for you, has a spot for u to add an insump protein skimmer (more powerful) and also for bioballs. U can buy sets at ----, they are like $150-$200, but it is a good setup, comes with a protein skimmer sometimes, but it is a crap skimmer. I would recommend a jebo protein skimmer, in sump. They are not a good company, but MINE works like a charm, LOTS of foam coming out of it. and they are cheap as dirt. If u need help setting up a fuge (in simple terms) then email me, ill keep ya up to speed every step of the way.

Also, I would say get rid of one of the triggers, mainly the clown. Although they are cool, they can become evil and big, and yer tank wont be able to support it. Gimme an email though

did anything die in the tank? could the smell be from that? what kind of filtration do you have? if you have trites at this point and your tank is only 14weeks old i think you added to much livestock to quickly.

Did your tank cycle before you put all of those fish in there? It just seems to be a lot of fish for a 14 week old tank. You have to add fish slowly. If you add them to fast, the tank can't keep up with the bioload.
