thank tou very much . I tried to do a search on bio balls but did not come up with any thing helpful. ? If I rince my bio balls off with old tank water wont my bio load be reduced? and how do you feel about ceramic bb

If you rinse your bio balls off with tank water then you will be doing the same thing that the water does anyway, constantly crashing over them. ONly your being a bit more aggressive IF and IF they have collected any detritus or debris. No I wouldn't worry too much about that any more then when someone changes a carbon cartrage in a HOB filter.
The ceramic, well I used them once in a canister filter but no big deal, anything that holds bacteria. I still feel the bio ball would have better surface area.
I use a large refugium now, and have removed my bio balls long ago.
