bio balls

i read on a website that i can get rid of my bioballs and put a deep sand bottom....has anyone heard of this and does it consist of anything more.....:notsure:

bioballs trap nutrients turning them into nitartes, so do deep sand beds, only slower.....

I was told the same thing and have since gone to the berlin method? I think it just uses a sock filter, a protein skimmer and the rest is nature. Been good param wise so far, 2 years plus!

Bio balls are no problem, just use filter floss above them to trap the larger particals. Maybe 2 or 3 times during the year take some of the balls out and rinse them in salt water and your good to go.
Its all a matter of your maintanence habits.
