Bio wheels

I just got my Emporer 400today in getting ready to start up my tank. While doing some research on it today I read that I should take out the bio-wheels as they will fill up with harmful bacteria. I also read that I should not use any of the filters and instead should fill up the case the filter would go in with live rock rubble. Has anyone else heard of this? Any differing opinions on the bio-wheels?

They DO NOT fill up with harmful bacteria! They have HIGHLY BENEFICIAL bacteria that converts ammonia to nitrite and nitrite to nitrate. This is very important. Overstocking, overfeeding, not properly caring for the tank, etc...lead to nitrate problems. People blame the biowheels for this, when there are many other factors first. But they DO NOT grow harmful bacteria.

I have a emporer 400 running on my reef tank right now on my 55 gal. It does not fill up with harmful bacteria because my tand is doing great.

OK, what about filling the case with live rock rubble instead of the filter. This sort of made sense to me as it is a natural filter. Not to mention saving me money on filters. :)

It would be redundant. There is nothing that a biowheel grows that doesn't grow on LR, bioballs, or even substrate and tank walls. So in most cases, the biowheel is removed because it is unnecessary as part of the biological filter. Not in particular because it is growing directly harmful bacteria.
When these objects - bioballs, biowheels, and yes, even live rock, become overwhelmed with detritus, nitrate problems arise.
Ugluk - Yes, people do many modifications for these hang on filters, including making them small refugiums. But I would propose to you that if you have a tank with LR (and it is not a predator tank), and have lots of circulation in the tank from power heads, then you may not need these filters at all.
HOWEVER, the filters will pull up, as they were intended to do, particles, excess food, etc. Normally trapped in a filter pad where it can easily be removed and cleaned, this food and gunk will then be trapped in the live rock rubble. And this too can result in problems.

It is impossible for me to answer this without knowing more about your tank. If you have a lot of LR, then there is no main reason for them. However, if you are not having any water quality issues, there is also no reason to take them out.

There is one benefit that bio wheels provide that submerged live rock doesnt, BY increasing air to water contact time it allows more ammonia to offgas into the atmosphere of the room and not stay in the tank for your live rock to break down, Honestly I consider Biowheels and balls a very nice addition to Any set up. they may be superflous if you have 3lbs per gallon of live rock but they are still very benificial and worthwhile if properly maintained.

i have a marineland eclipse 3 tank with biowheel running in the past and i loved it actually im not sure how many pounds of lr i had but i do now i had 40lbs of ls, i had a few probelms as a noob will when i first started out but i do think that useing the biowheel is benificial, but that is just mu opinion though.
i have to buy another biowheel when i get my tank up again and my lfs said they would put it in their sumps to seed it for me i have to give them props on that as i kinda dont like them but its the only great lfs around here lol
