Ive got a 55gal reef set up with a bio wheel sump system. I have hair algae growing in it as we speak, however the problem was traced to high phosphate levels in the top off water I was using. Use good water in your tank.

I've got a bio wheel, and I really like it. I can decide what material I want to use for filtration. I understand what people mean when they talk about the nitrate problem that will occur when the wheel stops spinning. But as long as regular maintenance is performed I don't see any problems with them at all. I really like the Bio-Wheel. :D

People say that biowheels cause high nitrates because they produce nitrate from nitrite. So does any other biological filter, but where the biowheel stops, live rock and live sand, or water changes takes over and takes care of the nitrate.

The only problem I had with nitrates building up was with an overfeeding problem. Since that has been taken care up my levels have stayed at or around 0. Of course the 40lbs of live rock probably helps

I added a bio wheel to help with my skimmer. It has done a great job in clearing up my water and helps my skimmer from collecting old food particles.

Biowheels are great, but when the bioload is large (as when overfeeding or when stocked with lots of fish), then the ammonia/nitrite is converted to nitrate extremely efficiently by them. This on one hand is great since you have great aerobic biofiltration, you now have lots of nitrate in the water column, which can only get converted to harmless gases in the deep parts of LR or in the DSB. To get nitrate from the water column into the deep LR or DSB is more difficult than if you are trying to get nitrate produced along the LR surface or in the LS.
