Very strange indeed! I just heard the box the kid was in was not with the balloon when it landed. I hope this is a publicity stunt.

CNN has just reported the boy is alive and well. Apparently this 6 year old and his older brother let the balloon loose while the father was inside. The kids got scared and ran off and hid somewhere thinking they were in trouble.
Of course now they have people calling in screaming, "Why weren't these kids supervised! What kind of parent would leave two little boys alone with with this thing?"

They're now saying the boy was hiding in a box up in his attic. Okay!! Let's get CPS involved! This was nothing more than a Leave It To Beaver moment. I think it'll come out the dad was building this as some kind of weather balloon experiment (he is a storm chaser), and he just got his kid's involved in the process. He blew this thing up to test it for leaks and see how it would look while it was fully inflated. His only mistake was to go inside and leave two curious little boys alone with what they saw as a very cool and giant toy balloon. So of course one or both of them started messing with the tether cables, and this thing took off. What would your normal response be if you had just let daddy's VERY expensive balloon loose? RUN AND HIDE!! They probably didn't even realize what was going on the entire time this event was unfolding. When he heard his parents screaming for him, he probably thought it was because he was in trouble for letting the balloon fly off. The kid is six. Unfortunately, this will probably be a very expensive lesson for Dad. I'm sure the authorties will find a way to bill him for all their search and rescue efforts.

They just announced they aren't going to bill them. I think they are convinced it was the kids doing and the parents weren't involved. Hope that really is the case.

It says in the latest yahoo story, that this family has appeared on wife swap twice. I would love to see that episode! If they were on that show they are definately a cooky family.

Now there is a youtube tape of an interview where the kid says "we did it for the show". I hope the Sheriff changes his mind about charging them

Just saw this story on nightline. They showed clips of this man on wifeswap. To say this man is crazy would be an understatement! If they did this garbage on purpose the man needs to be arrested and fined.
Or....maybe they can put him in his balloon and let it go again!

so, I was watching this family being interviewed this morning on the Today Show. The kid is kind of sleepy (rightfully so, it was EARLY in CO. ) As the interview progressed the poor kid PUKES all over the place. This father keeps going!!!!! He didn't miss a beat. I thought Meradith Veara was going to bust open laughing. She contained herself until she turned the camera over to the other poor lady who was cracking up.

After listening to the Sheriff and seeing the video of the balloon taking off I don't think it was a scam. That dude looked major POed when the thing came loose. Cops pointed out some stuff that doesn't sound like the actions of someone running a scam.

It was a scam, I mean when it happened they called the media before calling 911 for god sakes. lol just a big ol publicity stunt.

Yeah, turns out the Sheriff used the interview I watched to help set them up. Turns out this couple met in acting school. Cop must have attended a better one. He made a pretty convincing case for them during that interview.
