Do you like the look of black sand in a aggressive tank? I have seen more and more people doing it, and I don't know if I like it...

I love the look of the pure black stuff (but it doesn't come in Live - just a mixed-black live) but I think if you want to keep it looking amazing you'll be constantly picking off little bits of LR rubble, etc. But yeah...it's pretty snazzy.

I love black sand period. But live sand helps too much by keeping down nitrates for me to change. If I was setting up a whole new aggressive tank then I'd use it.

I had black sand in my tank for a long time. Looked great but it was very hard to keep clean. I ended up getting rid of it in the end.

I'm getting ready to put some Black Tahitain moon in my FW tank. I'm just on the fence whether to use Black, tan, or mix them.
Black darkens up your fish and brings out their color more. At least on Freshwater tanks. IMHO.

I've read in a coral magazine about filling the edges along the glass with black sand to cut down algea growth against the glass.
I'm going to try that on my next tank, which in turn is black w/ black stand.

I think black sand would look really good in an aggressive tank!

I couldn't disagree more... but I may be a bit bias.

Well that is a nice tank but your ray loooks a little darker than normal . Just an observation .
What you need in there is a shark .

Thanks. I don't remember but I will find out in the next couple of days because I have to go to the lfs where I bought it and get some food. I'll check out the bag and grain size. I don't vacuum it (not sure if it's vacuumable or not). My sand bed is pretty established and the ray keeps it stirred enough that I really just leave it alone.

Thanks for the observation sherlock, (where is the appropriate smiley when I really need it).

Thx... just so you know, the sand is 3 years old. I have never vacuumed it or cleaned it in any way. IMO the white specks, which will occur over time, do not detract from the look of the sand. If I really wanted to I could sift through the sand with a net and collect a lot of those particles.
