im planning to get black too but will there be any difference in water chemistry compared to sand, black sand, or crushed corals? im just about to start putting in some substrate( kinda confused what is good for a FOWLR, i like wrasse, trigger, tang, perhaps snowflake eel and anemones in the later)any suggestions?

Stay away from Crushed Coral! Stick with sand. I would say live sand, but idk if it helps any. I have used it before and currently have it, but have not noticed any difference with cycles or anything else.

In theory, there could be some difference in buffering capacity (most sand or crushed coral in the hobby is carbonate). There is a kind of black sand that is aragonite. But if it is silicious, it would not provide this (perhaps negligible) benefit. In addition, theoretically silicious sand is more angular, and could impact interstitial fauna (the stuff that lives between sand grains), but I suspect it is also negligible.

one drawback of the dark sands is it reflects less light back upwards then the white sands.. the amount of light it stops reflecting is not that much, but when it comes to sps, that light difference may impact the placement of corals..
i havent tested this theory, but i imagine the darker sands would be warmed more by the lighting as opposed to the white sands.. which could mean the difference between life and death if the tank gets too hot.. im not saying the darker sands WILL overheat your tank, but they could help to contribute.. and again, i havent tested that theory..
the darker sands also show ANYTHING that lies on top of it..
