black sand

this is more of a request than a question, but i am going to be setting up another tank in my room and was wondering if anyone out there has any pics of their tank with black sand. I searched the internet for a while and cant realy land any real good pics. Any imputs or images will help.

looks good, how is the maintnence on that sand, i heard it hard to keep clean. I was also wondering if the corals have that extra pop against the dark contrast.

I would say that lighter colored things do stand out a bit more. Like for instance pastel colored corals look really bright. But, yes you do notice everything on the sand. I just make sure that I vacuum the top layer of the sand with my gravel vac. I don't dig with it though because I don't want to release a bunch of crap into the tank. I really need to get a bunch more cuc honestly. That would take care of a lot of the problem.

i think im going to try it, i got a ton of green start polyps in my main tank so i thought that neon green would just scream in there. also would be putting in some blue/ purple mushrooms, zoos and some otherr corals, who knows. my main tank is getting overpopulated so i thought i would get a hexagon tank for a nightlight. would you recomend this sand though.

Sure. It has the same care as any other sand. I just bought it bulk dry from my LFS and let the LR seed it. Anyway, I love it and am happy with my choice, so go for it!
Ummm..... and we demand pics and a tank build thread!!!

Here is a pic of my new BC29. It has been running for 2 weeks. I used the "Tahitian Moon" sand. I love it. That is the main reason I got the Nano.

I am going to ask a question here and then jump back before I get scorched.
I have read multiple times on this forum that lava is bad for your tank, I am assuming that black sand is composed of lava?

I looked at the Carib Sea website and there is not much information. It says that it has inert ingredients and it should not affect the pH. I don't believe it is bad for your tank. Alot of hobbyist use it. I like it personally. I have the "black pacific" sand in my 55g. It looks more like salt and pepper. I also have just plain dry aragonite in my 90g. It is just a personal preference of how you want your tank to look.

I well aware of black sand beaches and coral reefs, but the ocean is huge and like I said, I have read in a couple of posts on this very site that lava can leach harmful minerals into your tank, so there seems to be different thoughts on the subject.

Hmmm, I don't think that lava that has hardened in the specific area and been underwater prolly has any to leech out. It is the kind that they sell that is red colored and has been sitting on land for years that has those. Kind of the same reason you wouldn't throw granite in your sw tank. Just my reasoning on this...

you seem to be right about the difference in sand, just looking at the pictures you can tell, anyways i was wondering how you guys keep your sand nice and clean, obviously you have sand sifters, but does this black sand come with extra manual cleaning to keep that nice satin sand bed. i am sure it does, but it does look good. Im excited to see what some greeen star polyps look like against that backdrop.
