Would you mind posting some pictures of yours; I am starting my research/setup for my first lion and would like to see a black one.

Are you referring to color morphs of P. volitans or what passes in the hobby as a "red volitans", which are actually P. russelii (Russel's Lionfish)?

P. volitans grows a bit larger (up to 15" or so), while P. russelii
will max out at around 10". Care for both fish is identical. BTW, a diet high in krill is not a good diet for lions as it has been associated with lockjaw. A good, varied diet of various seafood is the key to good nutrition and a healthy fish.

Our adult P. volitans
:

Frank Marini (FMarini) has a new book out entitled Lionfishes and Other Scorpionfishes
which is what I consider the "bible" for keeping these interesting fish. He has also written an article on keeping them (Google: Frank Marini Lionfish).

That is a nice looking fish; I am setting mine up in a 150g tank. This is a tall tank so I think it will be a good fit for the volitan. Thanks for the pictures.

The major concern is tank width. You'll need a tank that is at LEAST 18" front-to-back so the fish can turn around. Our fish is in a "wide" 100 gal that is 24" front-to-back and it's a super footprint.

BTW, our fish is the fish that's featured on the cover of Frank's book...it keeps wanting to sign autographs since it's "famous"...

My 150 is 4'x2'x31"; like I say from what I have read about lions I think it will be a good tank for one. I might not even get anything to go with him.

That's an awesome foot print for a volitans! Our 100 is 48" x 24" x 20". It's nice to see the fish do more than "pace" or simply park itself.

Please post pix once you have it up and running...

Yea I still gotta get a pump thinking mag drive 1800, how do you think that will work. Then do the whole cycle thing.

Mags are good pumps, but the larger models tend to run a bit warm for my taste. For our larger setups, I've been using external pumps (I'm really liking Little Giant ATM). Our 100 gal utilizes a LG 4-MDQX-SC for the mains and an Iwaki MD40RLT as the CL pump. The LG runs thru a 1/4 hp chiller and a SCWD, while the Iwaki pushes 3 returns.

We keep a fuzzy and a D. barberi together in a std 60 gal with no real issues, altho the fuzzy is indeed the dominant lion. I wouldn't keep either with our adult volitans tho...I'd be afraid that she would slurp them down and ask for seconds.
