I have a snowflake eel that seems to be severly bloated or even swollen. I only feed him 3 times a week and I am careful not to overfeed. He was a very healthy eater until about a week ago and right now he wont eat anything. The tankmates are a V lion and 2 hermit crabs. No tankmates were eaten. I dont understand where the bloating is coming from. Is there some sort of disease that can cause this? PLEASE HELP!!!!

Farley I have a snowflake as well and through information I have read and found is that bloating can be caused by 2 things that I am aware of.
1) your v-lion could have stung him... the tank i recently purchased had an sfe, vlion and a clown grouper....the gy who i bought from told me the eel was once stung by the vlion and got swollen....although he looked like Shite he recovered in a couple weeks as I was told... so if its recent past couple days just hold off and monitor.
2) what are you feeding it? Everyone at the lfs's say silversides and thats it....bs... silversides don't provide all the nutrients they require to have a full variety of nutrition they require. I went to grocery store and purchased fresh squid today in fact to feed him silversides, clam(lfs frozen pack enriched with vitamin C), and fresh squid from grocery...3 squids=65 cents...equals I am going to soon be getting from grocery store only...alot cheaper! I also got a masher and a bowl combo and purchase garlic. basically mash 2 cloves in the bowl real good. get a small amount of water from your tank and poor in bowl mix it around..basicallyy turning yellow...bought a small cup size strainer and strain out the juic from the cloves into a dixie cup and let his squid and clam soak in it for about 10-15 minutes.... F-er ate it up instantly... equals happy eel... Sorry I went on but in case you didn't have the info you are a little more educated as I was taught through reading.. good luck!

Im not shure that anything can be done as far as treatment. But if it where to happen again i would remove the lion or the eel to a new tank. To prevent any futher miss haps. Keep us posted on the situation. By the way nice looking sfe MiamiReefr.

what areas of the eel are swallen? the head and neck regions? eels require amounts of iodine in the diet along with other things.check your iodine levels in your tank .you may need to supplimet if your not doing so already be sure to test levels before dosing overdosing can be lethal.but lack of oidine can cause goiter(swelling of glands)
