My naso is not eating his greens or any food that i offer him. From pellets to flakes but he is doing a good job on the rocks he picks at them all day so I'm not to worried. Should i be because he not taking in algae sheet,he is new to the tank,or could it be the type of greens.
It's probably that he's new to the tank, but it could also be the greens.
My Naso will NOT eat green algae sheets and will only eat two brands of sheets: Two Little Fishies Sea Veggies (Julian Sprungs) and Ocean Nutrition. He prefers purple, red or brown sheets.
If you have a fish that will not eat off the algae clip there are two methods to try:
1) rubberband the algae sheet to a piece of live rock rubble and drop it in the tank. The idea behind this method is that, it will look more like live algae/sea weed growing and the fish will be more likely to accept eating it this way
2) Hold an algae sheet in your hand in the tank in front of a powerhead, or the return pump. Rub the sheet in between your fingers to make it start flaking apart. It will look like you're feeding flake food to your tank. The hope is that your fish will accept the flakes of algae sheet as they move through the water column. At first, they might not, but may pick at the flakes once they land on rocks. Once they get the taste and get used to your hand being in the tank, they might start nipping on the sheet while you hold it. This can be great, because the fish will learn to trust you, which can really come in handy if you ever need to catch it. You might have to play around with how big the flakes are that your rub off. My tangs prefer flakes that are about 1/2" x 1/4" strips, they're snobs. I have multiple algae eaters in the tank though, so this method is much, much more effective for me than just attaching a strip to a clip.
Still attach a strip to the clip, hopefully they'll start to get curious and nip at that as well. The Ocean Nutrition brand has algae sheets that have already been soaked in garlic, which will help entice many fish to eat. I highly recommend it if you have a finicky eater on your hands. My Naso (and all tangs) go nuts for the Red variety especially.
