That is Ick and you need to quarantine him and all your other fish . Its a parasite that only goes on fish and when you quarantine and medicate them the ick that is in your display will die off without a host . The ick WILL SPREAD

a lot of tangs carry ick but it's not noticeable because it's in a dormant stage wich is the hardest to cure but after weeks you will notice white spots so by now all your fish can have ick abd and if you don't treat it it will spread to places like gills and kill them

Ich can cover the fish's body. Here is a link to provide info on treatment:

I always wanted to know what "hyposalinity" was but kept forgetting to ask. Thanks for the link. I saved it on my favorites list and printed it out for my research bookbinder.

The best way is not the fastest try finding medication that's invert safe buy some stress coat it will give them mucus and it will help and the best way is to remove all your fish and medicate them in a separate tank

And then keep them out of the display tank for 8 weeks to make sure you kill the ick parasite that remains in the display tank. Check the link Beth sent you. It's the best method. Trust her, she knows her stuff. Send her a PM if you have ANY questions.

Medication is not a good choice since you do not have an established quarantine tank. How many fish do you have?

You should use hyposalinity treatment.

Ich can only beat down stressed fish. Fish naturally have a slime coat to fight off ich for the most part. There are many people who live with ich and do just fine. This can only be done with perfect water conditions(rodi and no nitrates) and a stress free environment(no fish aggression).

For example, when I was running a (fish only/tapwater) tank my blue hippo tang loved letting me know when the nitrates got too high he would start showing a small amount of ich. I would do a series of water changes to knock the nitrates down and he would go back to being fine.

Before you go the QT route consider all the possibilities of reintroducing ich back into your main tank later down the road on accident and decide if it's right for you.

Also consider a uv sterilizer to reduce the amount ichs swimming around looking for a host. This part is highly debatable and is unproven but I still use it as a just in case it works kinda thing.

I realize this post is late but maybe it will still help you in the future or someone else.

Hope everything worked out.
