The LFS has a great deal of these Blood shrimps. They are very attractive to look at but they are not cheap, ..around $26 American..haha..Are they fairly hardy or are they to be avoided by the beginner?

yeah, very hardy. just make sure it doesn't have any possible predators in your tank, and have place for it to hide during molting.

Buy! Buy! Buy! I paid $40 for mine as well. It was at the lfs for about a month and a half. One day I had some extra cash, so......
Anyway at that price if you can afford it I would buy two. Mine seems kinda shy, and I've heard that they are a little more outgoing if there are a couple of them. HTH.

During my first tank cycle - I had 3 of the Fire Shrimp and 1 CBS ( Do not let the LFS place the fire shrimp in the same bag if you buy a multiple purchase - they'll kill each other !). I let the LFs talk me into buying them and didnt know a whole lot about the Nitrogen cycle at the time. Well to make a long story short - they made it through the first tank cycle and even a emergency ammonia spike shortly thereafter with flying colors. I found it interesting because all of the internet sites talk about how sensitive to water quality they are. Each shrimp has molted about 3 times now in only 2 months - in fact they're getting pretty big. They were shy at first but come out with regularity now ( cept the CBS ). When they molt, they tend to hide or isolate themselves pretty well. The shrimp often chase each other around when they get too close, but nothing has ever happened so far.
BTW I paid $23 for mine, but have seen em as high as 29 around here.

Nope not yet. He just molted a fourth time this morning though. He's getting big! I can now easily see the barbs on his claws. Impressive looking. So far so good. I don't have any real small fish however. My smallest is my single Yellowtail damsel ( sole survivor of fish from my initial tank cycle ) and he is about an inch and a quarter in size. My Mandarin is also about that size, and so far nothing has happened. My CBS loves the pellets I feed it. He always ends up with one and greedily runs to his cave to nibble on it. I have caught him carrying around dead damsel fish before from my first cycle, but nothing has been attacked to date.
