Anyone have any info on these guys? I picked one up from the LFS about a week ago. They had him for a week, and he has been doing good, eating, and no signs of ich.

They are apparently very hardy and they do very well in captivity. My LFS had one in and I was so tempted to buy it, you've got a really nice catch there!

Thanks,
They had the fish in the store for a week. I figured it was eating well, and didn't show any signs of stress so I figured why not give it a try.

Nice looking vlamingi. They get pretty large, but you have a 240 don't you? They are hardy (like other naso's) will graze on some algea, and will not mix well with other naso species, but not sure about other tangs. That's about all I know about them. Bo

He's in my 240 right now. He's picks at the hair algae thats taking over my tank. Plus I've been supplementing with nori, emrals entree, brine shrimp, and formula 2. From what I've been able to gather they get around 18". I do have a whitecheek tang in with him as well, and they seem to get along great. I havn't seen any aggression from any of his tank mates.

From what I've read it's best to vary their diet. I feed mine mostly nori, and spirulina (sp?) foods. I do offer meaty foods as well, ie brine shrimp, and mysis shrimp. i also have been feeding pellets, and the naso really loves the pellet food. Its an herbavore pellet thats supposed to contain lots of garlic, and vitamin c.

ReefersX2,
You wouldn't happen to have any tips for me would you? How long have you had him? The one that I have is maybe 1.5" in length.

I have had mine for around 6 months when I got him he was around 1" and he has grown to about 2.5". It is a very docile fish and gets along with my other tangs he is in my 240 and is loving it. Very easy to feed he eats anything. I got him as a blue spot naso and only paid $20 and the cheapest I have seen another was $100 so hopefully you got a good deal too.

I'll just say i got a great deal. So far all the inhabitants get along. For a tang he does seem to be very docile. Nobody messes with him, and he doesn't mess with anybody. He has eaten everything that I have put into the tank.

I guess I made a good decision on getting this fish. I love that pic. I normally don't buy anything without researching 1st, but this fish I just couldn't pass up. I was at the LFS, close to closing time, and 1 of the employees said that he was going to take him home if no one bought him by the time the closed. Well he only had a 55 gallon tank, and i really didn't want him to go to a 55 gallon tank. Since the owner, and I are freinds I asked if I could take him, and he let me have him.

Mine is growing like a weed, and seems to like fish and other meaty foods as much as seaweed. In fact it steals silversides from my anemones when it can. How big is he? I got mine at about 5" and it was very docile, but it has grown at least an inch since October and is now a bit aggressive, especially at feeding time. I know he can't stay in my 125 forever, but he's only about 6" now so I'm hoping to keep him for a while longer. Great fish though, lots of personality and very hardy.

Mine is currently about 1.5" in length. So far i have been very pleased with this fish. He's still a bit timid. If I approach the tank to quickly, or move to fast while I'm close to the tank, he'll dart back into his hiding hole.

I've got a Valmini as well with my Yellow Tang, they both get along very well. as far as their diet goes they love it when I feed them fresh broccoli as soon as I put it in the tank you would think I gave them a scooby snack or something

Old Yeller Tang,
Is Highland in so. ca. If so there is 1 couple of wholesalers in LA that get them in from time to time. I'm taking a drive down to LA tomorrow to go take a look at what they have.
I'll try feeding mine broccoli tonight and see if they like it.

You don't see too many as adults because of their massive size - if you plan on keeping this as a full sized adult in your 240 you better limit your self to only 2-3 more fish.
Here is an almost mature adult from the Seattle Aquarium...
