I have never heard of them turning black, but who knows?! My sister has one that is about 4 inches, and 4 or 5 years old and it is as mean as S@$%!!! It killed her flame scallop and any other invertebrate that she has tried to introduce into the tank. Needless to say, she has given up at the moment and is even afraid to try to introduce any new fish!
