blue hippo tang

It is one of the more shy tangs, and will often hide in the rockwork. Don't be alarmed if you find it on its side, as they often do this if they can't find shelter. They feed on zooplankton and algae, and will eat other prepared foods.
How big is your tank?

They're beautiful fish who appreciate a rich herbivore diet. Being in the surgeonfish family, they lack the mucous lining on their bodies to protect them from certain parasites, especially the dread "Ich (aka Ick)". If you have a Fish Only aquarium (no invertebrates, keep some copper cure around. I've had 3 in my life and all 3 died of "Ich". It's the only species I've ever had to endure that fate. They are beautiful though. Oh, they also lose their color as they get older, and they can get big (too big for a 70 gallon), but if it lives that long in your tank, consider yourself blessed!

Yeah it will be a while before it gets that big, but if does, you'll be one lucky guy! Even with their reduced coloration, they're gorgeous.

They're quite hardy except for ich! You just got a 70 gallon tank and you have to move out of the country in 1.5 years. Ouch. You won't be able to take the fish with you I'm afraid. You'll love you're hippo tang!
Do some research of proper feeding though. Like most tangs, you should supplement their diet with algae (or at least boiled lettuce) but preferably algae. I don't know if saltwaterfish.com sells it but petsolutions sells dried green, red, and purple algae to feed the tangs.

You can also use Nori, from the chinese section of the grocery store. Add fresh garlic and vitamins to it food to help the immune system. They do grow kind of fast though.

I always wondered about whether or not Nori was an acceptable option! How do you add garlic and vitamins to a dried product? This is a much cheaper alternative and I'm all ears!

Just put a couple of drops on the seaweed. With garlic I crush it and rub some on so the juice gets soaked in. Only use fresh garlic, waste of money on the other stuff.

drops? I was thinking crushed Centrum! :)
Do they sell vitamin supplement to add to food?
I feed my fish vitamin enriched brine and mysis shrimp, live brine, live clams, masago, and hope that they get their vitamins that way. Oh, my two clowns and my one damsel love the Zooplex. The copperband, royal dottyback and yellow clown goby don't pay that much heed.

There are vitamin supplements you can drop onto algea; specifically I use a product called Vita-Chem. Also, don't use any kind of lettuce. Although some people will say it's acceptable, you should never feed your fish with anything that's not naturally found in the ocean. Lettuce lacks many vitamins and minerals that are found in seaweed/algea. In fact, lettuce is mostly water and lacks any real nutritional value for humans as well.

I don't, I use the dried purple algae from petsolutions primarily. I read about the lettuce somewhere when feeding tangs. I thought boiled lettuce was a nasty thought...even for a fish!
