It is perfectly normal for him to hide. Stay away from the glass. You don't even need that light on. Is that tank a QT or the DT?

Yes, stay away from the glass. You are stressing the fish out way more than necessary. Using the flash by the tank is certainly not helping either. Let him calm down. Too much stress can be fatal.

He was probably fed a diet of brine shrimp. It fills them up but has no nutritional value and will make their stomach bulge. Get him on a good frozen blend diet or make your own. Mysis, brine, flake, nor pellet diet is good or a hippo. You can certainly offer it once and awhile, but they need a quality diet. What sized tank do you have? How long has it been running?

It is good that the rock is mature. The tang will be able to graze from it.

Well, I have to tell you that the 55 will not be suitable for this fish long term. You will have to either find him a new home or upgrade your tank in the future. He will be fine for awhile though if you keep your tank lightly stocked, feed him a quality diet, and keep the water parameters pristine.
I also have to say that hippo tangs are one of the top fish that come in with ich. They are highly susceptible to it. You may want to plan ahead just in case. Read Beth's Common Treatments FAQ for info on ich, it's life cycle, and viable treatment methods.

Do mysis, brineshrimp and that kind of food really have no nutritional value to them? Cuz ifeed mine Mysis, brine, squid, mega marine, formula one, and of course algae clips every day. He is about six inches very active, healthy, colorful and FAT. It must just be the seaweed then. He also eats krill and silversides that i put in also.

Brine has no nutritional value, that is like candy for fish. Mysis has little nutritional value. It is more of a snack type food. The rest of your food sounds great! Variety is key. There is nothing wrong with mysis and brine once in awhile. Just don't make it part of the main diet.
