i have a blue hippo that has been in QT since june 30th. the ich seemed to be gone, now its all of a sudden popped abck up in the QT treated with copper. im wondering if its even ich, is it possible for the tiny grains of sand to stick to him? because he sleeps laying in the sand for some reason. also i have noticed black dots around his head, i was wondering if these dots were natural markings.

if you have super fine sand in there then yes it can stick to him. It does to my fish all the time. I would keep him in there at least another week. Can take 3 weeks for ich to work its way out. If you want to be absolutely sure and he is doing well then 4 weeks

yes i have really fine silica sand. the copper is made by "AQUATRONICS" its called "CUPREX II" i was testing twice a day untill i got low on tests now im testing once so ill have enough tests to last for two more weeks. the copper level is .15 -.20 hard to tell the difference in color, im using the aquarium systems copper tests.

It's been a while, but maybe someone will still read this.. I had a blue hippo, and i made the mistake of buying it on impulse without reading up on it (won't make that mistake again), he was about a foot in length. I was wondering why he would "dock" himself or "wedge" himself in a rock or by the filter so that he didn't have to swim. I thought maybe he was lazy... After researching (on SWF and my LFSs) i found out that's what they do. After about a week, I noticed that he had bumps on him, looking like ich, then all of a sudden, I noticed a hole in him, by his head, Then another, and another. I guess they are really prone to skin disease. Before could try and treat it, he had passed through the night. Is your hippo still alive? If so, how is he doing?
Has anyone else had a problem with hippos?

I had marine velvet take my hippo in no time flat.. i though he had some stres at first because of a few whit dots on him they went away after 2 days so i thought no problem.. then a few days later he was pretty covered by the dots and within 2 days he was almost compleately covered and coulnt breath well at all. i hit him with copper but he didnt last though the night that stuff kills way to fast...its wrong. i treat all my fish with copper for 30 days in the q-tank when i bring them home. I never want to go through that hassle again or see another fish suffer that bad.
