I think (and have tried), If you have good bright lights, black is better, if you have mediocre lights, blue backing will brighten the tank and colors. I just switched out a friends 55 with 260 PC to blue from black and it looks ten times better.

I am going with black since my overflow is on the back of the tank and is black. Also, with 6 t-5's I should be good for light. Going to try the window tint method and can always rip it off if I do not like it.

I like blue for an appearance of more depth... but eventually its all going to be pink because I dont scrape coralline of my back wall.

all my tanks are black because i like the way it really contrasts with the colors of the fish etc.

I vote black. I had a reverseable blue / black background. It went on initially as blue. Eventually turned it around to black and think it looks ten times better. More natural IMO.

The blue background looks really good when the glass is nice and clean. Other than that you can see anything on it. I had both. I like the black much better.

I've had both and I like both. It's all a matter of what you like. before painting or doing anything extreme. Try some of the background paper you get at the LFS. Most are reversible and have a blue side and black side. give each color a week and see which YOU PREFER. Then paint away.

Personally I like black because it gives good contrast for the colors in the tank. But, any background is better than none. I also personally don't like coraline build up on the back either, but that's just me.

I have tried both and like a dark blue background. You can buy some poster board - it is really cheap and you can play with the colors before painting the back of the tank.
