Is a blue ridge also a fire coral? I see the hairs, and my coral book says...
Although technically not an octocoral, it has as much in common with stony corals and hydrocorals as with octocorals...
So, whatcha know?

Blue ridge is not a fire coral, But here is some information on it from another site, I have some and it has been doing well in my tank.
"Blue Ridge Coral, Heliopora Sp.
The Blue Ridge Coral, sometimes referred to as the Blue Coral, is often mistaken for a small polyp stony (SPS) coral because it has a hard blue exoskeleton with long, thin polyps. It really is an octocoral (soft coral) and its growth forms are branching, plate-like, columnar, or encrusting. Its body is composed of calcium carbonate and iron salts, which lend its distinctive blue color. However, the polyps are either brown or light blue. They are an interesting and peacefull coral that will add diversity to your reef aquarium.
The Blue Ridge Coral is generally peaceful towards other corals in the reef aquarium and will do best added to a well-established tank. It requires moderate to high lighting with a medium to strong water current in the aquarium. Calcium, strontium, iodine, and other trace elements will need to be added to the water.
It contains the symbiotic algae zooxanthellae from which it receives the majority of its nutritional requirements through photosynthesis. It does not require additional food to maintain its health in the reef aquarium, but it will feed on micro-plankton or foods designed for filter feeding invertebrates."

OK, thanks. My (totally awesome) LFS gave me one about a foot tall! It's interesting to say the least.
I have it in the corner up against the front glass hoping it will encrust so it's blue skeleton (or exoskeleton
) will show.
Still not sure why it's not considered a stony though.

OK, I will post pics tomorrow, the lights are off now.

It's not the prettiest coral, it's simply brown, but if the skeleton has anything to offer, I'll keep it for a bit. Least til it hits the glass.

All right you picture junkies.

Here ya go...
Here's the coral...

Here's why it's called Blue ridge. And as the skeleton hits the glass, you will see the blue better.

And here's why I asked about it being a fire coral.

Looks kinda like the fire coral I see in the Keys. Put your arm in the tank and rub up on it. You'll find out soon enough.

Ya know, it's almost rediculous, the cost of shipping! You can prolly ask your LFS to get you one for less than a shipping cost. And you'd get a much bigger piece.

Maybe that will help with polyp extension?
People say the polyps only come out a couple of days a month...maybe they need more bacon too?
