From what I've read, up to 12 inches. But you have to keep in mind that that's diameter not just length. You can keep a foot-long fish in a 75 gallon because the fish is relatively narrow. But the ray is not only 12 inches long, it's also 12 inches wide. I think you could keep one in a tank smaller than 240 gal, but it would have to be a specially designed tank (like a cube). The size of the tank from front to back is an issue...you need to give it ample room to swim. Also sand ONLY (no cc) and NO triggers!!!

Well, to be truthful, I would recommend a tank of more than 240 gallons. I usually recommend 300 gallons to be sufficient for them to do well. Although, you can keep them in smaller tanks, it's always better to be safer than sorry. And very true about the sand. Stingrays require a soft substrate so that they will not be hurt. And the remark about triggers is good, too. Seeing as triggers eat cartilage fish and stingrays and sharks are cartilage fish. So, I would recommend nothing lower than a 240 gallon tank so that the stingray has ample space to grow and swim.

Thanks for the help everyone! I have another question, are there any other kinds of stingray that are as big as the blue spotted or smaller?
