blue starfish

If you are talking about the blue linka, they are hard to keep, especially when shipped to you, ie, from this site. Very sensitive to PH, Salt, ect.. changes. Usually don't live to long. Easier choices would be brittles and serpents. My blue only lasted one week, and I have a pretty established tank. Also need to be aclimated over a very long period of time, ie...6-8hrs.

i have been told that linkia's were one of the more hardy of stars and reef safe. after reading goofieones post now im confused although i do agree with a longer acclimation and there sensitivity to salinity. does anyone else have any info on this ?
thanks,
chris

I got one and within a week it had died on me. Not a pretty sight. If you are going to get one at a LFS don't let the person helping you touch it with thier hands. The oils in your hands are really bad for the starfish.

I agree with the negative posts. These stars are hard shippers and are extremely sensitive to changes in water chemistry. If you acclimate them as you would any other animal likely it will die what looks like a very painful death. I advise that you research their requirements thoroughly and take a good 4 hrs to acclimate the creature. There's lots of info out on the 'net about these guys.
Brittle Stars are much better for your wallet and tank.

old yeller tang, where did you get your pacific blue starfish? Any pics? I just bought a blue linkia a week ago and was starting to worry about it. It hasn't moved a whole lot just yet, but if you say that it took a while to acclaim to the tank maybe thats all that is going on. Hopefully he'll be fine. If i understand correctly these stars just feed off of surface film and other microbes in the tank, right. No direct feeding is required?

All starfish should be acclimated one of two ways. The first is a drip method in wich you drip new salt water in the floating bag over a course of 4-6 hours. I have never used this method but i think you use an IV bag or something to drip the tank water in very slowly to make sure the salinity doesn't change fast. The second way is to float bag and add say, a 1/8 cup or so of tank water every 15-20 minutes. Continue this for 4-6 hours till the salinity and pH in he bag is same as tank. The last method is the one i choose to use.
Anyone correct me if i'm wrong, but this is what has always worked for me.

I would strongly suggest a serpent star or a brittle star, simple because they are much more hardy and can be really cool as well.
