The dude at my LFS said that I shouldn't get them. In fact he will not sell them. Im just starting my second tank (90gal) and need the cleaning crew, my budget is low because I just bought all the new goodies. I just want the best bang for the buck.

i have blues and reds in my tank and they are all good...i don' understand why he would say this other than that the reds are more expensive so maybe he can make a few extra cents on each one

I dont understand why he would say this either. My guess.... he has not idea what he's talking about. I think just about everyone keeps blue legged hermits including myself.

blue legs have known to be agressive and eat snails for fun. they can also eat corals but most crabs can do that. they are unpredictable. i have kept blue legs in my tank before without any problems. mabey he has just had a bad expirience with them. i wouldnt worry about it tho you can always buy them from swf

what type of corals would they go after? He did say that they might go after the snails but he was very adamant about it like they ruined his tank

I think it may be better them then to have 10 less cleaning crew for the new tank.

I have blue, red and jade leg crabs in my 125gal.. no problem... I just keep enough empty shells in the tank to keep em busy...and they leave my snails alone....

I think I have a agressive blue that is eating some of my other crabs. I havent been able to catch him in the act yet but I keep hearing a popping/cracking sound every now and then. Then I end up seeing a piece of a crab leg floating somewhere in my 20 gallon.
I am fairly confident that it isnt a Mantis Shrimp as I have read up on them, I dont hear it all the time at night just every now and then.
So far I have found 3 dead crabs, two blues and one red.
Could it be that he's hungary or just a bully rogue? I thought they ate the alge and stuff on the sand bed?

As far as crabs go, they can be aggressive. and I personally don't like them. I wont put them in my tank anymore. But that is a preference. Putting them in your tank isn't going to kill your tank. They just attack your other snails. And you don't have to have hermits in your tank to have a healthy tank. I you want hermits you can have them. Like I said it is a matter of preference.
Just a note: I love my new tool bar. I finally have spell check. Now you all wont know that I can't spell worth beans.

I used to think they were the same as the red tip or scarlet but here it is over a year later and some how all I have left is blue tips when I started with an equal amount of both. I put some nassarius snails in the tank and by the next day a blue leg was walking around in its shell. I only have about 5 hermits in my 100g and I will never add anymore period (regardless of leg color lol). Have about 25 snails: 10 nassarius unless more got eaten, 10 cerith, 4 margarita and 2 astrea. the margarita and astrea dont do much but the cerith and nassarius do more for my sand, rocks and glass than hermits every could.

I have numerous species of hermit crabs in my tank, including blue legs. None of them have caused any problems.

Given time, any hermit crab will kill a snail if you dont have a LARGE number of extra shells in your tank. As the crab grows, they need larger shells and if there arent any lying around they will kill eachother or snails to get those shells. Ive found that if you hide collections of different sized shells in a few caves around your tank you will never have to worry about them.

Ok I need to do a little more research. But the tradition Blueleg Crabs, to my knowledge, do not bother anyone (These are not to be confused with the larger Blueleg Electric Crab cousin.. which are aggresive and need extra shells).
Until I eat my word stop the hate on Blueleg Crabs, they grow no more then a 1/2 inch..

Heres one of my peace loving crabs
