Aquarium Corals by Eric Borneman is one of the best books out in my opinion, but one of the good starter books is The Marine Aquarium Problem Solver by Nick Dakin....Nick covers all the basics and more, and also has question and answer type of info. Very good starter book. :)

I have read one of the books mentioned but it is still not for dummies. If they dont have one, I think I'll write one. Most books I have read go to in depth for the beginner.. I think beginers need a book that explains things in laiman terms and most books do not. It took me forever to understand most books I read until I "played" in the hobby a couple of years. Just trying to help the Newbies. I wish I had known this board when I started.. But the board is allot of opinion like some books are. I want a book of facts and is written in simple terms that my dog could understand. And he is a dumb dog. So if you now of one I will get it and read it and see how it goes..

i thought the new marine aquarium by michael paletta, was well written for the beginner, it is IMO a very thorough in depth and easy to follow book, and helps in deciding which equipment and fish to purchase, and has a step by step guide on how to set up, and explains alot fo waht is going on, and i know of one person i have let read my copy who never did marine at all and another who was cc and ugf until they read it and they both were not affraid to take the dive(esp the cc situation, her lfs had her scared and conviced both about sw and anythign but cc, i know i talked to the guy and he was dumb enough to argue with me about everything, he even wanted to start a fight over false perculas, i asked if he could get some and he wanted to fight(and i mean fight, not claim, but fight, especially when his customers were listening), telling me they did not exist, i know how he is with his customers, he knows all and if he doesn't know it, it does not exist and. or if it isn't his it is NO good for a sw aquarium), but reading this book, they both switched(almost, she is right now, and he(the lfs) is not happy with me, but her and her husband have seen my tanks)
i don't know if you read this one, but i do like it for a beginners guide

a quick point and a question.
This hobby, from all the reading I've done, isn't really a "beginner" hobby. yes it can be done by beginner's, but it is complex compared to freshwater or even other hobbies. For example, there isn't a "quantum mechanics for dummies" book. well there might be, but you get the picture. It's very hard to sum up opinions or facts on a hobby that is only 20 years old. This board is excellent as it has experienced people on it that can "hurry" the learning process. Other than that, there really isn't, or should be imho, one book that gives you all the info you need. KIM trends change... most the books I look in tell me to have a plenum. Anyway, I'll shutup as I'm getting long winded.
If you write a reef for dummies book, I'd like to pre-order it now :D
also wtf is a false perc?
