Brain Damage, Possible Cause?

Noticed a hole in my closed brain coral yesterday. As far as I know there has been no physical or mechanical damage caused to this coral but then I have only had it for a couple of weeks. Any idea what might cause a hole to develop in one of these corals? Any chance this will kill the coral and if not, should I try anything to correct the damage? As always, thanks for your help.

DRUGS!!! LOL could not let that slide :hilarious
a worm that could be inside? I have heard of this before, do you have night lights to watch that whole? This is not a mouth, it a hole made by something. How long have you had this coral?

There could be multiple external reasons and I will say internal too. The rest of the brain looks good. Right now, I wouldn't worry unless you see the problem getting worse. Now that is what I would do if it was my brain. I have seen damage on many of my corals for many reasons (where some were extensive) and the coral made it back.

I do have night lights. I will keep an eye on the hole to see if anything shows up. It appears to be turning bright green around the hole so hopefully it is beginning to heal. The fellows over at the local reef club think it might have been caused by something (possibly another coral) falling on it before or after I placed it in my tank (about a week ago). Would you recommend a dip in Seachem Reef Dip Coral Disinfectant? Thanks for yours and everyone elses help in this matter. Sometimes I feel like I've got a matching one for getting in to this hobby :)

Hey Chief. IS3 here. Good Hobby to pick up for an Old Salt. The hole that "blenny" is in is a deep hole in the skeleton. From you picture, which is a shallow wound, looks like something took a nip that split the flesh. My concern would be that its pulling away from the skeleton at that spot. Did you use any type of dip on this coral before you put it in the tank?
Do you have any fish or inverts (butterflys, crabs, shrimp) that might be interested in taking a bite of this beauty?
If its a nip, it may heal itself. If its an infection of some sort, keep a close eye on it. Kent Tech D is a good anti bacterial/protozoan dip that may help.
keep us posted

Hello IS3,
Thanks for the info. The only fish that might take a nip at this or any other coral in this tank is a pygmy angel and he hasn't shown any interest in nipping at anything other than the live rock and some of the plants. There are two crabs in the tank that were hitchhikers on the live rock. I haven't been able to positively ID them though as they stay pretty well hidden in the rocks. I do have a purple lobster, some peppermint and cleaner shrimp, but I don't believe any of them would attack this coral.
I didn't do a dip before putting in my system, only because I know the fellow that I purchased it from and he dips all of these corals before they go in his tank. Unless someone thinks it is a bad idea I believe I will pull it out tonight and give it a dip in this Seachem Reef Dip I bought today.
I don't see anything in the hole (other than skeleton) and it only goes in about a quarter of an inch.
I will let you know how it goes. Thanks again.

Roger that. Keep an eye on those peppermints and the lobster. You never know what they might go after or where.

I'll check the alkalinity tomorrow. I tested it a few days ago and it was okay. My salinity was somewhat high about a week ago but it is now setting at 1.025. My calcium is just under 400 but I am gradually bringing it up to around 440. Other than that, everything else is great. Thanks!
