Ok, I'm writing this before hairtrigger can get in here and throw his 2 cents in. I trust most of you guys more than ms him. Ok, what is the minimum amount of time a tank should be set up to be established enough to keep a favia or favites brain? Does it REQUIRE a dsb? The water perams are all good to go- just tested it twice this week to make sure of my conditions. What should my ka be at? It's 8 now. What I'm looking for is general info about lighting, current, feeding, and tank age and perams. Thank you for ANY info!

Either could do well in a mature and stable system with proper calcium/alkalinity/ph levels. They do well under moderate to high lighting and mine seem to prefer a moderate/in-direct current. A DSB is not needed for either...but could benefit both via the added filtration benefits. Mine like a meaty direct feeding after lights out...sometimes I'll treat 'em to a private feast early in the morn before the rest of the beasts get awake.
I would insure the system is stable though.....not a coral I'd add to a new system....myself I'd look at 6+ months with good stability before I'd attempt one.

ok, I'm right at 6 months. My tank has only had an ich outbreak about 4 months ago, and nothing else bad has happened. I have about 20 lbs lr and several assorted polyps, shrooms, and other little beginners. All of this is in a 29 gallon. I only have 1 yellow watchman, 1 coral banded shrimp, 1 emerald crab, and about 5 blue leg hermits, and 1 turbo snail. All that you mentioned ph, alkalinity, and calcium. ka is at 8, calcium is 440, ph is about 8.1. What do you think?

This....

...I believe thats a favia of some type. I bought it as a damaged speciman and its done great so far. With care i don't see why you can't select a brain of some type for your system. Levels look good and your system should be able to maintain one...best of luck and let us know what you select.

TOO LATE!!!! Ohhhhhhhhhh SNAP!
I told you they would "do best in a mature system"
I said it would not necissarily thrive in yours.
ESPECIALLY because:
Like NM says, you need to feed it.
You also need to feed your fishie.
You don't have a protein skimmer.
You have a crappy filter.
You don't have the DSB to help counteract these problems.
WHile a DSB is not necessary in a system, they usually have the proper other filtration including:
ADEQUATE LR.
You have three small pieces.
NOT ENOUGH.
When the waste builds up, and you don't do water changes when you should, like you DONT, your nitrates, trites, and ammonia are going to rise. Your tank will crash. You have none of the necessary means of keeping it running well long-term. As of now, you simply have a little bit of life in there.
NOR DO YOU HAVE A CLEANUP CREW.
Nothing.
Nothing but lights.
and you get your water tested at the LFS occasionally, which often uses cheap, unreliable test kits to save money on giving you free testing. You don't really know how accurate your water quality is.
You don't test it yourself.
PLUS YOU USE TAP WATER.
See, the thing is, you don't mention all these little things to the people on the board. When you couple them all together, they equal a very risky system. The odds are not in your favor.
As they say, God is in the details.
And a reef is a long-term thing.
You forget: The reason I advise you so harshly, is because I see your tank dang near every week. Sad thing is, I know its needs better than you.
Why put your money into a beautiful coral now, when there is a chance it won't thrive.
Why not invest in the proper equipment and accessories to have a successful system?
I know you want a good tank, so do it properly. Learn from MY mistakes.
And bring beer when you come hang out later today.
No, nevermind, I'll get that.
Why?
HAPPY BIRTHDAY. :D

Hey, it just occured to me that you may be able to fit a 55, or something more reasonable, on that counter, and use your 30 as a refugium on the 55. That would take care of your filtration issues I think. And then since your lights are ok, you would be on your way without having to incur more costs.
