I am going to be setting up a 90 gallon fowlr soon. I have read a ton of materiaL on here and have gained a great deal of knowledge. One of the areas that i'm still confused about is overflows. There purpose and when does one need them. When i do this I only want to do it the right way. I have noticed so much success and all lot of failures that I hope to avoid. The tank i have was used to keep rays in. It is drilled in the bottom 2 holes for a 1" bulkhead fitting and 1 hple for a 1/2" bulkhead fitting. I have 2 inline little giant pumps one 510 gph and one 900 gph. A wet/dry filter, and a ocean clear canister that I now know will not work well with the system I want to make. The holes are in the center of the tank in the bottom. All help will be highly appreciated.

Welcome to the site...Nobody answered you so I thought I would say hi at least, your question is beyond my knowledge...LOL I use canister filters. If your post gets too far down the list just type in BUMP on the reply to post and it will come back to the top. Sometimes those in the know of how to answer your question aren't on here all day and might have missed your post.

HI there,
If I understand your post correctly, you are inquiring about overflow box. The overflow box is required when your tank is not drilled and you want to run anything (sump/refugeum) outside of your tank. Since your tank is drilled you wont need overflow box. There should be some type if covering around the drilled hole. If not, than you are going to have to do that.

Great So Then I Will Use The Drilled Holes For My Return And Suction Side Then Correct?
Do they have the platic cover aruond the holes, if so they act as overflow box. The water will fill to the top than spills over to where the holes are drilled and runs into your sump (just as an example). The return can be done in different ways. You don't have to use the drilled holes for the return, in fact it might be better if you don't.

Overflows work the same as overflows at your major man made lakes. They displace water once it has reached a certain height. Some are internal, and some are external. Internal generally speaking are not as noisy, and allow you to snug your aquarium up to your wall.
We all understand your aquarium is pre-drilled, however none of us are sure if you have an overflow tower inside your aquarium. That tower would be there to establish a certain water level in your tank. Usually they are black plastic, glass, or glass with acrylic covers. Usually inside those towers is some PVC, and it is normally plumbed with what is called the Durso method. There should be or you will need a Durso Stand pipe, which pulls water from your aquarium, and a return pipe with a nozzle.
It is possible your aquarium was setup for a closed loop filtration system, which I have no experience at. However, I'm sure someone else here has experience with them, and could answer your questions, if that is indeed what you have.
You could provide a few photos, which would help just about anyone answer your questions.
