Brand New Hobbyist

Hello!!
I am a brand new saltwater hobbyist. I have just purchased a 90 gal Oceanic bowfront.
In the past I have had fresh water (pratically all my life) but I wanted to make the move to saltwater. My wife and I are really looking forward to getting this tank going!!!
For starters, the LFS we bought our tank and setup from has a orientation class that we will be attending next week. I purchased (not in the tank yet) live sand, coral, reef, and the VHO lights (I dont have model number in front of me).
Can any of you point me to a few good books or resources? One maybe on testing of the water, etc,etc (maintenance) and also a good book on possible inhabitants? Also, I know that there are a lot of test kits out there....which one is best all around?
The LFS has been very helpful....but I also like to read on my own.
This site has been GREAT!!
Glad to be a part of the community...HAHA!!!
Take care everyone.

Welcome! You are where I was about a year ago and this site has been better than any other resource. As far as books go, I like Natural Reef Aquariums by John Tullock. It doesn't have much about cycling, but it sounds like you know what you doing there.
I too kept fw for years until last summer, after college graduation, I was finally able to start with sw. It is so much more interesting and rewarding. I almost feel my fw days were a waste of time.
Welcome, take things slow, ask lots of questions, and put aside more money than you thought you needed!

Hey Bonkuba,
Welcome to the board. Be patient, read all you can and you'll find this hobby has ultra-rewards. As far as books go I recommend Marine Fishes and Reef Fishes by Scott W. Michael. They will give you quite a bit of information about most captive and aquarium species. i.e compatibility, diet, hardiness, and info on behavior paterns. I've heard the book ekclark recommended above is good too. Wish ya all the best starting out. Ask questions ;)

Welcome to the hobby...and to the site!
Great to see a new member taking the time to research and learn prior to taking the plunge.
For books I'd suggest "The Conscientious Marine Aquarist" by Robert Fenner...a good resource that will help get you started on the right track. On-line I'd suggest you check this link its full of vital information designed to help develope and establish a marine system.
Best of luck to you and your wife as you establish your new aquarium...and keep us posted on its progress.

Go very, very slow...with all aspects of this hobby.
Many people rush, and before long their lack of patience usually creates problems within the tank which causes stress on them, and makes the hobby a burden versus an enjoyment.
Research everything...including the equipment your purchase. Look to the net for your equipment and supplies.
Good luck.

I cant wait to get someting in the tank.....haha!! Kinda boring looking at it without ANTHING in it....water, etc, etc. But I promised myself I would go to the class (LFS) and do research.

Bonkubo...
One thing you should consider while attending that class...as well as any interaction with your local LFS...always remember they are in business to make money...and many of them will try and push things off on you.
Recommendation...any advice...remember it and research the topic for yourself and compare answers.
Barring the inherent set backs in this hobby...it is an extremely wonderful hobby for one to be in.
