Brand New to Saltwater

Im new to this and don’t even have a tank yet but this is what my goal is. Tell me if im crazy because I only know what Ive been reading on the web.
100 gallon tank
2 clowns
3 tangs (all different species)
3 green chronis
My plan is to start with the clowns and let them get established. Then add all 3 tangs at once. Then throw in the 3 chronis. Think this will work? I know the clowns are territorial so I thought they should go in first. I know the tangs can be aggressive with each other in pairs so I thought a small group would be best but Im not sure if the different species will cause problems. Also I don’t know about finding all 3 tangs that I would like at once and close in size. And I think the chronis will be fine because they like to school. Obviously I know I need to get the tank setup and stabilized long before buying any fish. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Ok. Like i said im brand new to this and havent even started. What size tank would i need to do this. And why does saltwaterfish.com sell the green chromis in groups of three? It was my understanding that the pure damsel species would act like this but I thought the chromis were a little more on the mild side.

A 100 gallon should be plenty of room for some tangs but do your research as some will get to big for that tank but there are plenty that can be kept in tanks that size but some may fight other tangs so u might be limited to 1 tang. But hey there are plenty of fish that look great u can mix in. And as for chromis it depends on which chromis u are talking about. The blue and especially green chromis can b kept in schools but its best to have like 5 or 6 at least to distribute the agression between them as they will etstablish pecking orders and if your school is to small some may die.

Thanks a lot. What would be some suggestions for the 75 gallon? I deffinetely want a pair of clowns. Id like a variety of color. And with my budget and space limitations I might even have to go with like a 50 gallon. I dont plan on getting into coral anytime soon. Sorry if these are dumb questions but the stickys at the beginning of this board aren't working and I am away at school and don't have a whole lot of time to do my research right now. Obviously I will do a lot more research before investing in any fish or setup but I would just like to get some general ideas together before I just jump in.

Welcome to the site!
The 72 inch tanks are best for tangs. The 75g, 55g and 90g are 48 inches. Build the rock in the center to allow the fish to swim around the structure, they like to stay on the move and in too cramped a space they act like a caged lion going back and forth. The fish will be less stressed and look more natural swimming around and through the rocks.
Anyway, your first purchase should be some books.
Read the 101 things to know at the top of the New Hobbyist section. There are so many fish in the sea, so instead of what fish...settle your mind on getting the tank ready for whatever

Thanks. The 101 things to know at the top of the new hobbyist section isnt working. And as far as tanks go, my mom is really into yard sales and says she sees them all the time for cheap. Is there anything particular to look for in a used tank or would I be better off saving my money and buying a new one? Im a student so cash is always tight but Im about to graduate and start a new job when I move back home. Just looking for a hobby to help pass the time. Any input is greatly appreciated.

Okay first thing is get a book
. Go to a library to at least get an idea of how saltwater tanks are set up. Don't even think of fish right now.
A lot of the terms can get hard to follow if you are very new at fish tanks and a book will help you grasp things a liitle better. Used tanks are fine as long as they are not scratched up or leaking. I would look for glass. I don't care for acrylic tanks but that is just me.
It takes about a year to get a tank going real good...past the diatoms and coraline (nice purple stuff on rocks) to grow. So if you have to move too soon that would be a bummer. I'm afraid saltwater and expensive go hand in hand. The tank and stand are the cheap purchases.
The smaller the tank the harder it is to keep stable, lots of young folks do it but it is harder. You might look online and find whole SW setups...that is the cheapest way.
Skimmer, lights, power heads, filters, live rock, live sand, and often even corals and fish.

Thanks. The library hadn't even crossed my mind, haven't been to one in a while haha and this sh**hole town doesn't even have a bookstore that I know of. I know moving is going to be an issue as well as expenses that is why I am wanting to start piecing the set up together now. I won't be in my permanent residence for probably another six months (banks don't really wanna give a 22 yr old a loan for a house) so Im just trying to gather info right now.
