While most every one would agree with you, and most folks do use IO for thier salt, I am not a big fan of IO. It is too inconsistant.
OK, to inconsistant for me.

Instant ocean here and I've been thru a few others. I have a reef and still prefer its 380ish ca, 1300ish mg, 10dKH ish and dosing as required over the reef salts with elevated ca (I havent found the "reef salts to be any better in other testing. ex last 3 buckets of seachem reef ca 580, mg 1180, dKH 6)

Yes, see. It depends on how you like to run your reef. I myself like to run a higher calcium 420-450 and a lower alk 7-8. This is why I don't like IO. So for me IO doesn't fit my parameters.

i guess since its a mixed tank I'll have to I'll need to treat it as reef. so the next question would be should i rotate between Instant Ocean and Reef Crystals, or just stick with reef crystals(it sounds like the preferred one for reef)

I would not rotate because its going to make your dosing schedule even harder to figure out if you decide to dose. I would pick one salt and stick with it.

Agreed. Pick one and stay with it unless you aren't getting the results you desire.
Oh yea, your gonna want the reef crystals.

I don't like additives. I use IO. I have never had issues with it, things seem to be fine, for now. It's also cheaper, in these parts, than any other salt.

Been told that IO isnt very good, my LFS owner whos been doing this hobby since he was 9 (now 50) says that IO formula hasnt changed since then and the trac eelemts arent very high, not even in the reef crystals, he highly recomends TropicMarine, he uses it in all his tank once of which is a 1200 gallon reef display with a two foot clam in it... he also has does custom tanks for people in their homes of the same size... so i think he knows what hes talkin about
