Well done! IMO the clear tube is going to get restricted with algae over time as the light can penetrate into is. Can you hard plumb that part? Is there a black tubing that size you could use?

I never really thought of that - I could probably hard plumb it, and it's standard 3/4" ida tubing, so I'm sure that there is black tubing out there - I'll look at lowe's the next time I go. I like the flexibility of tubing over hard plumbing - that's why I use it.

May not be an issue anywhere else you have used it if you have but I would think that right there in the overflow with the tank lighst shining on it would seem like a great place for algae to take hold.

Makes sense, the only problem is that I siliconed the overflow in - I can pull it out this week - better to start it right rather than start it and then realize that it should have been done differently - thanks for the advice.

Maybe I should leave it that way - let the algae take hold and turn it into a little turf scrubber - they are only there for a CL system anyway. I'm putting a korilia 3 in for internal flow. What do you think about that?

The other thing to consider then is the metal hose clamps. No matter what the material the metal will be attacked by saltwater. There are other plastic clamp options out there you would do well to take a look at.

They are going to be out of the water - do you think evap and salt creep will still attack the clamps? I can probably get plastic ones from lowe's too. I'll check.

Yup I believe the metal will eventually start to degrade. Like you said might as well do it correctly from the start.

This is a stupid question that does not pertain to this thread at all, but spanko, when somone asks you where in Michigan you are from, do you put your hand in the air in the shape of a mitten and point to the "main land" or the "peninsula". My girlfriend is from okamos, and she said it is pretty much a state wide thing (she showed me where she was from that way)

Na. I just say Detroit. Am close enough to it that there is no need to use the mitten. Now when someone asks where my son is attending college I do use my hand to point to the area of the mitten.

In Ohio we only have a few areas - you are either near Cleveland, Columbus, Cincinnati, Indiana, or Pennsylvania - sometimes your are "halfway between X and Y" No cool mitten tricks or anything like that. You could be 50 miles from cleveland and you still "live near cleaveland"

Quick question - I am worrying that my current set up for the return line will restrict flow too much. I am thinking about ripping it out and replacing with 45's instead of the 90's. I also want to know what would happen if I take my stand pipe out? My drain hole is 3" above the bottom of the tank. Would taking the pipe out just make the noise from the overflow greater?

Still working on finishing the plumbing for the CL's - I decided not to mess with the stand pipe or the outflow line. I got all of the trim done for the side cabinates now all I have to do is stain and finish the doors - unfortunetely I had the lumber cut to the wrong size for the doors, so I have to use my buddy's table saw next weekend to fix the problem. This week I will plumb my ATO and my salt mixing tank for water changes. I did get a leak test done and the main return and outflow lines work very well. Here are some pictures - hopefully only another week or so before the sand and rock and salt water go in.

Leak Test

ATO / Water change cabinate - Fresh ATO will be on the top shelf

New Problem - My corals have been in the QT tank for almost 2 months now. For some reason my GSP's only open at night in the dark. When the lights come on they close up. What's going on?

Thanks for the compliment - Hopefully I will have the tank done this weekend. I'm cutting the rest of the wood and probably picking up some new sand. I can finally see the light at the end of the tunnel (After 2 Months and over $800 spent)

My supply order came in yesterday as well as 2 new RO/DI filter cartridges. I also started work on my ATO. I'll post some pics this weekend or the beginning of the week (I want it to work before I post the evidence) I'm heading to my LFS in columbus this weekend to get some sand.
Not too much longer.

So my leak test did not go so well. The overflow is not water tight for some reason, so water can leak into it and then down to the sump - so if the power goes out I could have a huge mess on my hands. I just ordered some weld on #4 and I'll do the overflow right this time aound.
I also broke my UV sterilizer - I doubt that I'll get a new one unless my tank looks like it needs one - algae all over the place - green water
On a lighter note, I installed my skimmer and my side cabinates are almost done. Just need some stain and urithane and i'll be ready to go. (They turned out pretty well)

Sorry to hear about the setbacks, but it is better to find them now than to have something go wrong after the tank is up and running. Hopefully the repairs will go smoothly and you can get this thing running. Good luck.

So aside from the minor set back - I got some work done this weekend. Picked up 35 lbs of sand (will get more this weekend), cleaned out my 22 cube that is going to hold a pistol shrimp/goby combo with my devil zebra damsel, plumbed my skimmer and salt mixing tank. I also got all of the trim done on my cabinates (I'll get them stained and post some pics later on this week)
Mostly trimmed power center:

Top down of my tank/sump:

Front of Sump:

The far right PVC is the salt mix in line, the center is the ATO line, and the left is the skimmer return.
Back of sump:

Salt mixing tank plumbed:

Hopefully my weld on #4 comes in before the weekend, then I can fix the overflow and get this baby running
