I am going to the Bahamas and I wanted to know if it's illegal to bring corals from there. I was thinking to bring a thermos and put a few in it.

Not leagle to bring lice animals into the us without the proper permits. If customs were to catch you attempting this it would not go over really well. Do your self and our natural reefs a favor and keep buying from your LFS. Of course alot of that is probably wild caught too.

I can tell you from my own experience with a custom scare in Canada, that they take things VERY seriously now (post 9/11). I wouldnt do it , if for no other reason than if they catch you they WILL put you thru hell and keep you there all night with searches, paperwork, etc. Not to mention fines!

Certainly not worth it!
Does the phrase"cavity search" send shudders down your spine? My next door neighbor is a customs agent, he said they'll hang you up by your busterbrowns and shake you until all your dignity and money rattles loose.

Besides even if you some how do get it through I have my doubts as too how well the chances are for the coral to survive.

You have to have a license to collect corals from any ocean.
So even shipping them back is illegal.
But if your brave and have nothing to do for 5 - 10 years go for it.
And remember you are not going to be in the US. They play by different rules.

Definately looking for trouble doing the illegal collection and trying to get them back. Years ago it was even hard to get corals and other critters back from the bahamas. We used to run a boat on weekends from Fl over to the islands, and do some diving and fishing, and even back then customs and the Bahama's marine police were very keyed in to checking out any boat that had divers or fishermen on them than they were looking for drug boats it seemed. We were boarded many many times. Virtually any coral in flordia is illegal to posses or collect even if it is gonna die, and Florida is very harsh n the penalties for those that get caught. No first chance or plead ignorance.....their aws spell it out quite simply....for all to understand.

I took some LR and other critter from Hawaii. Was that also illegal? I'm not going to take any chances bringing corals from the Bahamas. Is definately not worth it.

Live rock, Bahama starfish (Oreaster reticulatis), longspine urchin (Diadema antillarum), Venus sea fan (Gorgonia flabellum), common sea fan (Gorgonia ventalina), any hard or stony coral (Order Scleractinia), or any fire coral (Genus Millepora).
this is Florida, not sure about the Bahamas, may want to check with the authorities there,
the list is long of what you can take , here's the link

Its specifically spelled out in the Florida Laws, ANY LIVE ROCK is illegal to remove from beaches or the water in the state of Florida. You stil legally have to have a permit or liscense to harvest what is legal in terms of fish etc.

He may own the land that meets the ocean, but no one owns the water.
It is impossible to own water in this country.
You can own the land the completely surrounds a lake, but you do not own the lake.
Not sure why this is, just know that it is.

all you need is a florida SW fishing liscence resident or non-resident to collect specimens for your personal consumption. you need to apply for another liscence to collect commercially, I believe it is $50 dollars plus liscencing fees that is if you get approved
