I've been noticing some bristol worms in my tank, at least 3 or 4 so far all different sizes. Do these reproduce quickly or could they have come on my LR? It's been in my tank for about a month. I've read good and bad things about them.......

they are good cause they will eat uneaten food and fit in tiny holes that your CUC cant get into. other then that they eat dead fish and its a free critter

I guess pain really is relevant. I got stung the other day, i didn't even know it till I pulled my hand out and it was itching. It itched off andon for a couple days, but now I don't feel anything.

nope. and trying to take each of the little bristle off?!?! its a nightmare!
Ya, that aint fun.
I found the best way is to use a dry paper towel and wipe WITH the angle of the hairs, not against it. It sorta scrapes them out of your skin.

They reproduce fast. However, they will keep their population in check. If there is an abundance of food laying around, they will increase in population, if you have less waste, then they decline in numbers. They are a VERY effective part of your CuC.
And I was worried when I first noticed them as well. But now that I have lived with them for a while,I appreciate the hard work they do for me.

They are detritivores.
Google "marine detritivore" and click on the link to the article by Ronald Shimek.
It should be the first hit.

No, they only grow to about an inch. They wont eat anything living and are kinda slow so they probably couldn't catch a fish if they tried. They're favorite meal is fish poop and anything decaying. Some people believe that they eat fish because they have caught them nibbling on a dead fish. Believe me the fish was dead before it got to it.

There are many types of bristle worms, most that we see in the aquarium hobby are harmless (other than irritating bristles) detritivores. Scour the web...the internet is our friend.

I have never, ever seen one eating a healthy specimen...only a dead or dying one. They are opportunistic scavengers, not hunter/killers.

My largest ones are about 6" long.
They only come out when I feed, and it hits the bottom of the tank. But they are all around, hidden in crevices. Natures little vacuum cleaner.

Wow, glad I know this. I have probably like 50 of these guys now. They reproduce quickly.
I like them in there though, as was said they eat uneaten food and clean the rocks.
One bad thing is they tend to go into my filter and clog it...
They're awesome though, when I feed the tank like 20 of them stick out and some are like 6-8" long. It freaks people out.

Nice thing about them is they keep their population in check, the populace goes up and down in accordance with the excess feeding habbits/detritus buildup.
