Brittle Star losing legs

Can something happen to a green brittlestar for it to loose pieces of its legs or does something have to be eating them? I have had the GBS for about a year and a half. This started a couple of weeks ago. I did notice prior to that that he had stopped coming out during feeding time. My fish have been the same for about a year have hermits and one emerald. They have been in for a while.

Do you have a Tang?
Mine lost his legs to my tang when he wasn't so timid. they have grown back now though. althought i never see him anymore.

I'd check your salinity, maybe it fell out of the invert safe zone. What do you feed him?
