Broken halide am i gonna get cancer pls help my family.

I got water on my 400 watt 14k xm metal halide bulb last night while filling my tank up It seemed fine and did not break, well after it had been on all day i noticed tonight that there was a yellow tinge color in the tank well to my suprise the bulb was broken, the first 2 inches of the glass broke in half and fell down and was resting on the insides of the bulb. The lfs said turn it off i am going to get cancer and everything in my tank is going to die that the glass is a uv shield. The hood was closed for the whole day except for 30 seconds or so when i fed the fish and noticed the broken bulb still working. Am i going to die with my fish? This sucks.
Seriously, can i get cancer?

Yeah if you dont have a really bad sunburn your fine. And most likely so are your fish. Get another bulb. What I see here is a hot bulb that got kinda cold water on it. Glass will break under those conditions get a splash guard that will help alot

I wouldn't worry about it. I'm suprised it didn't blow up and pop all of the glass.

The guy at the lfs said all there fish in there display tank died within minutes of there bulb breaking. Any ideas?

You're fine, the UV produced by a broken bulb doesn't penetrate very far into the water and it's not much more harmful than exposing your skin to direct sun

OMG if you guys could have heard this guy.....He freaked me out he started yelling at me saying im gonna get cancer and all my fish will die.
Might have to call him back.
Tell him im not dead ............................................................yet??

wow..... some people are to funny..... I would hate to see him get a paper cut, he would probably check into the ER lol
He probably wears sweat shirts and pants in summer too lol sorry, I'll stop now....

dude, are you serious? im in yacolt LOL what lfs do u go to? ive been to 2 so far, saltwater fantaseas and seahorse aquarium supply, hated fantaseas, seahorse was nice, but not much in the way of fish, but a decent amount of corals

I am afraid i am serious, sorry.
Sehorse is my main choice, they can order a fish for you if need be, fantaseas will give you bad advice and they are pricey not to mention the dumbest hours on earth, and even then they are always late. Rose city aquarium on powell has a very nice selection and they have good prices, get there on shipment day and they will give you a deal.

yeah, i liked the one guy who worked at seahorse when we were there, he seemed really knowlegable, and the lady who runs the fish dept at the ***** on 4th plain, right at 503, in the same shopping center as the sportsman warehouse and the la fitness, is really knowlegable as well. im wantin to go check out the one out in washougal, the kleen ur k9 an fish supply or whatever, do u know anything about them?
we're actually gonna buy our tanks from the ***** come jan, they're supposed to be doing their dollar per gallon sale then according to the manager and we're gonna get a 40g breeder and a 20g long to use as the sump for 60 bucks total new LOL

I dont listen to anything those ***** people say, I have heard them and corected them on several ocasions. I will sometimes go in there and see what they have just for the heck of it. As for the one in washougal i have seen it advertised on craigslist but have not made it out there yet. I saw your idea on the two tank method, good luck , the dollar a gallon sale is a good time to buy. Other than that i will only buy on craigslist, we have bought a 92 a 55 a 72 and differnt types of equipment on there.
The guy at sehorse is isac and i like dealing with him, very nice guy.

cool cool, yeah, we're gettin our tank an our bagged live sand from *****, the gf works int ere as a sales rep for blue buffalo dog food LOL so im in there allll the time, but everything else, im not sure, might order some stuff online, and im tryin to find any info i can about glass foam rock, but havent been able to find out anything yet :(
we might be checkin that place out tomorrow, if we do, ill post on here, along with pics LOL

I dont like that fake crap, with those small tanks you should just use regular lr.

ahhhh, i was wantin some i could carve, guess i could bust up the live rock LOL we're wantin to make 2 mountains/temples of rock oneither side of a buddha statue, just gotta find one that is sw tank safe LOL do u happen to know of anywhere we could pick one up at? i refuse to buy the one at *****, its made in china, and i just dont trust it to be saltwater safe LOL

What I would do is contact tap plastics (there here locally), get some acrylic rods. What you do is drill holes in your live rock and slide the acrylic rods in the holes stacking the rock the way or shape you want. Creating the piece you want.
Noticed on your userpage you are a truck driver, who do you drive for?
