Hey there Broomer, decided to start a new thread since we were getting so far off the "closed loop" topic. Thanks for the compliments on the tank
I really am kinda proud and just wish my photography could do it justice *sigh* My ex and her husband are really good photographers and should be coming up in the next few weeks so maybe I'll have something good soon
Now regarding your question, yes, it is a shelf. It's made out of a shaped 2x12 piece of pine, covered with several coats of epoxy paint and epoxied & bolted on the back wall of the tank. The "thing" on the shelf is really kind of cool. It's manmade, I think it's a half of a concrete block, I found it laying just underwater on our beach here. I thought that one of my future "prisoners" would love it as a home so I brought it back with me. I put it in my salt mixing tank for a couple of weeks to make sure it wasn't leaching any phosphates and stuff and now it's in a place of honor in the tank. I'm attaching a couple of pics to give you an idea of what it looks like.
