(broomer5) coral banded shrimp questions

I like your replies and value your opinion. Currently, I do not have any inverts in my tank. However, I would like to have a c.b.s but i'm unfamiliar with the proper tank chemistry. What is needed as far as adding calcium or any other additives? Any product recommendations. What and how often do they eat? Will low light be a problem? That is all that I can think for the moment. Thank you.

My CBanded is doing quite well. Lighting shouldn't be an issue. He's a scavenger and will eat your leftovers and certain algaes. I will also throw in a few shrimp/lobster pellets and he and the rest of my inverts go nuts. They attack them so ferociously that they are gone before they reach the bottom of the tank. Very cool for inverts (The CBanded isn't as excitable as the other shrimp---he just sort of lumbers along and picks them up).

Well thanks Matt !
I'm no CB shrimp expert but I'll tell ya what I'm aware of with these guys.
Coral banded shrimp are pretty much scavengers, and will eat darn near anything meaty you toss in, like small pieces of raw fish, frozen foods and even other shrimp ( little cannibals <img src="graemlins//eek.gif" border="0" alt="[eek]" /> )
Feeding them is no biggie, they'll grab up any missed food that you feed your fish. Or you can certainly target feed them if you want to.
I recall reading somewhere that most of the shrimp, like crabs, need calcium to form their outer exoskeletons, and without proper calcium, they have a tough time when molting. If you do regular water changes, your calcium levels may be fine.
A simple calcium test kit will let you know if you need to add a calcium supplement.
I like SeaChem Reef products.
Reef Complete to raise calcium.
Reef Calcium to maintain it once you get it to the level you want.
Others will drip Kalkwasser,or use other products on the market - up to you.
You'll want to test your alkalinity too, if you start adding calcium. You don't have to - but it's recommended by many. Calcium-Alkalinity-pH all interact with each other.
Continue to test your pH as you do now.
Other than that - I dunno - CBS have been known to fight with each other if you have more than one. I've heard of folks getting a mated pair, but adding 2 in the same tank can lead to aggression, and the dominant one killing the other.
They always seem to me that they are just ready to pick a fight anyways - front legs and pincers always up and ready. Some I've heard will even catch very small fish if they can. Not sure about that - maybe someone here has seen that.
Mine always just climbed all over the live rock, was pretty active and fun to watch.
I don't keep them anymore - but I still like them.
Sorry for drawn out reply - HTH

Thanks for your reply broomer5. I'll print this out and keep it with some other good responses by you. Thanks again.

cbs's my favoright thing in the tank asx it has been ever sincec i added him over two years ago he is like the caton of the tank and is not scared of nething not even you but when i stick my hand in the tank hell back off then come again and shake his arms kinda like hes al big and bad if i were you i would buy one because they are so hary and easy to keep but if you want hell shed more if you add a tiny bit of iodine some it seems to like it more when u do

I have a CBS and fe has not harmed anything
I even added a cleaner shrimp after him and
all is fine.
But like joe5 said he acts like a real
Bad a--
great addition to a reef tank!!

Thanks for all your replies. I'm looking into the additives. The lfs sells KENT products and Iodine seemed good however i'm not sure of what to get. Thanks again.

You can just get one before putting additives in tank. If it changes its skeleton about every 4-6 weeks, then the calcium in the water is fine. I have had these and still do for 5 yrs. Nothing bad with them, but they do seem to have a "attitude" They are neat !!

Should add that I had eggs on the fenmale up to her third molt? When they start eating plankton? Maybe (confused, was long a go).
