Since your tank is new the brown algea is proabably diatoms and it will not turn into coraline algea. You usually get diatoms when the cycle is finished and your cleanup crew will take care of it or it will go away on its own, but the coraline algea takes longer to form on your rocks and glass.

This green coralline algea that everyone is talking about, I just spent all last saturday getting that stuff off the front/sides of my tank. I didn't even bother with the back. I used a algae scraper which was kinda like a brillo pad (only softer) on the end of a stick... it worked ok, but it did the job. My question is, will that green stuff on the back turn different colors eventually if I only have 2 40w flourescents? Also, what is the best way to prevent the green stuff from forming on the front/sides of the tank?? snails??

I just do the same thing you do, use a scraper to get the coraline off the front and sides but leave it on the back. Every week I have to scrape it off the front but I leave it on the back, its been there for 4 months and still stays green so I don't think it changes colors at all. And as far as I know there is no way to prevent it, snails can't get it off because its too stuck on the glass. I think the reason it comes is something to do with the lighting.
