Brown Algae Outbreaks

Every time I do a water change my 55G FOWLR tank has a brown algae outbreak. I do use tap water because that is all that is available to me, but I do use an additive called Prime by Seachem to treat the water. What would be causing these outbreaks?

Is it a newer tank??? Using tap water doesn't help, no..... You can goggle airwaterice and purchase one inexpensive and good quality RO/DI system.

How old is this tank? Do you use municipal water or a private well? Diatoms are an algae that is most often associated with new tanks. Algaes from non-pure water are usualy other types of algaes such as cayno, which is usualy caused by higher amounts of phosphate. Diatoms are not an algae related to mineral deposits.

The tank was purchased used in June. It has been up and running for me since then. But all the LR wasd already in it. About a month or two ago I switched out the CC substrate for LS.

I unfortunately use water from the municipal water supply. I have been treating my tank for phosphate because it was always around a 1. I am going to go test the water now and will let you know my readings.
Whatever it is, it covers the glass and the LS. If i mix up the sand it comes up in clumps. And it scrapes right off the glass. It kind of looks like rust.

So I finally got back here to post my most recent parameters....at 7:00pm tonight they are as follows:
PH - 8.0
Nitrite - 0.3 mg/l
Nitrate - 20 ppm
Ammonia - 0
Phosphate - 0
Calcium - 300 ppm
SG - 1.0235
Temp - 79°F
KH - 14
Any ideas on what this stuff might be? And how to stop it?

HUH? diatoms are directly linked to mineral deposits, any form of soluble silica such as feldspar etcetera. or even already dissolved silicic acid in the municipal water supply.

either way. you do your waterchanges with tap water. then you have an algae bloom. there is your source. no matter what you treat your water with it doesnt remove anything all it does is help detoxify some of the junk in the water. say your municipal water has an iron reading of 10ppm you treat with a heavy metal detoxifyer, all this does to the iron is chelate it making it Less toxic (not non toxic) but still viable as a fuel for plant growth (read that part as algae). get what I'm saying?
